Questions About Houses

Hi, I just have a few questions about some of the houses in Skyrim:

First- The house in Windhelm, is it only possible to own it if you side with the Stormcloaks? Because I think it looks like the best house for my tastes but I don't want to side with those ultra-nationalist rebels.

Secondly- It says on some of the loading screens that thieves will enter your house to steal your stuff, is this true? (I hope it isn't!)

Thirdly- Is there a way around getting the house in Markath if you aren't level 20?

Lastly- Opinion question now, which house do you find to be better, the one in Riften (Honeyside) or the one in Markarth (Vlindrel Hall)?

Thanks in advance.

I got a house in Whiterun without having to get a house anywhere else. So, I think that answers your third question.

I wish we could check out the different house before buying them. I mean really. Only people I know who buy houses without looking at them first are slumlords hording properties in poor communities and then just renting them out as is. But that's reality and this is only a game. But still.

I guess I could try to sneak into the house before purchasing it. Hmmm.

1). Not entirely sure, but I think it becomes available after the bucher questline is resolved completely, even if you don't join the faction. There may however be some limitations on what you're allowed to do if you're currently sided with the Imperials.

2). Not that I've noticed, but then again I've always had a Housecarl in any of those places and only ever used one of my houses at a time for storing anything special. I would imagine that this was something removed by Bethsoft or severely toned down due to the number or unique things that you might not be able to get otherwise.

3). For me, earlier levels seem to come extremely quickly, so was far above 20 by the time I even got to Markarth. But I suspect that it would become available after completing the quests there, like any other town.

4). I would say that the better houses from what I've seen are either Windelheim or Solitude. The one in Markarth just didn't have many display racks or containers for me to do anything more than look around, say "spiffy" and leave after dropping a load of gold on the place.
