palenaka
I didn't really pay much attention and I screwed this all up. Here's the quest steps 1.At night find the murder scene in the graveyard 2.Talk to the guard at the scene. 3.Talk to Jorleif in the castle. 4.Talk to the guard at the scene a second time 5.Talk to Helgird in Hall of the Dead 6.Examine the scene for clues 7.Follow the blood trail from the scene 8.Search the building entire for clues (take Butcher journals, Butcher pamphlet and amulet) 9.Talk to Viola Giordana 10.Talk to Wuunferth the Unliving (Note: to get Necromancer's Amulet, do not ask 'What do we do now?' yet) 11.Sell amulet to Calixto at the House of Curiosities 12.Return to Wuunferth the Unliving and accuse him again 13.Sleep/wait till 10pm and patrol Stone Quarter (outside Blacksmith and The White Phial). Calixto will attack a woman. It is advisable to only attack him once he has killed the intended victim. 14.Kill Calixto 15.Talk to Jorleif (quest complete) 16.If Ulfric has granted you the right to buy the house you should now be able to decorate it, including 'clean that up murderer's mess' So during all this, after step 4... I ran off and did some things, I was offered to buy the house for 12k gold. So I bought it, went inside and it's a bloody mess. I saw several things that said "Invesitage this", ended up with a bunch of Butcher Journals. At some point here I was able to accuse Wuunferth and get him thrown into prison, quest was completed with no reward. Anyway, while speaking with the Stewerd to turn in a Bounty kill, I saw under "Decorate" was "Clear up this murderer's mess". Also I purchased kitchen and bedroom upgrades. I found a quest to deliver a thing to Wuunferth, so I took it to him in jail. I saw a dialog option that "The murderer has struck again" and Blood on the Ice started back up, with instructions from Wuunferth to patrol the stone quarter at night. Now Calixto is in my house. He attacks me when I enter, yet I cannot kill him back. (He just kneels in the yield position but won't die) He also will not leave my house to commit another murder, so I cannot kill him and expose him as the real killer. Any way to fix this via console? One of the wiki's said On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage MS11b stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages But this is not working for me. All the stages except for "setstage MS11b 10" say "Stage not found", and "setstage MS11b 10" doesn't do anything at all
xlr8films
Now Calixto is in my house. He attacks me when I enter, yet I cannot kill him back. (He just kneels in the yield position but won't die) He also will not leave my house to commit another murder, so I cannot kill him and expose him as the real killer. Any way to fix this via console? Try this: Next time he's kneeling, open the console, click on him, and type "kill" (without quotes, obviously.) Alternatively, I suppose if kill doesn't work, you could click on him and type "disable".... but that will leave the quest open in your journal, I'd think. Save before doing either. EDIT: And, just as an FYI, you might try looking for him at night to the left of the tavern (as you face it). There is a small quarter at the end of the road where merchants have their open air market set up. That's where he struck when I did the quest. He might 'warp' there real fast for you to do the scripted killing. You never know..... Edited November 20, 2011 by xlr8films
Tilarium
How long does it take for the quest to start back up after you have the wizard guy locked up?
xlr8films
About 3 days but you have to go talk to him in the prison.
Tilarium
5 in game days have passed after having the wizard locked up, no new murders. Anyway, perhaps a consol command, to advance it to the next step?
xlr8films
Which stage are you currently at? What does it say in the journal?
Tilarium
1.Optional: Purchase Hjerim and enter the house. 2.Go to the murder scene in Windhelm's graveyard. 3.Question all witnesses and talk to the guard. 4.Talk to Jorleif in the castle. 5.Report back to the guard in the graveyard and talk to Helgird in Windhelm's Hall of the Dead. 6.Follow the trail of blood. 7.Obtain the key to Hjerim, and search the house for clues. 8.Acquire Beware the Butcher! and set (#1 and #2) of Butcher Journal from Hjerim. 9.Talk to Viola Giordano and learn about Wuunferth. (Requires Beware the Butcher!) 10.See Calixto Corrium, and sell the Strange Amulet. (Requires Strange Amulet) 11.Optional: Report Wuunferth as possible suspect to Jorlief. (at this point, the quest will end until another murder occurs) 12.Confront Wuunferth the Unliving - Describe Strange Amulet. 13.Patrol the Stone Quarter at night and catch the murderer. 14.Report back to Jorleif. The steps listed on UESP. I got up to reporting Wuunferth as a suspect and watched Jorlief and the guard lock the mage up. I've been waiting for another murder to happen to talk to the mage again. Every game day I go down to the prison and talk to him but the only option I have is to ask for training. After Wuunferth was arrested the quest came up complete and isn't in my journal anymore. Considering I want the house.. without the crime scene... I need to finish this before I can have the mess cleaned up.

xlr8films
That is strange, agreed. You'll probably need to setstage it but I don't know what the exact command is. Maybe someone else here knows....? Have you tried leaving the city altogether and running a couple of other minor quests and then returning? Maybe that would shake it up a bit.... just a thought.
