jackofnothing
I just started using the creation kit and started making a player home. I started making a second floor but every floor piece I use is transparent from the first floor when looking up... I was hoping someone could tell me what piece I can use that isn't transparent on the bottom.
NexusComa
Well ... 1st off you can pick forms that have a top. (most all rooms made in Skyrim are from this type)or you could flip a floor form and use it as a top. (most all forms are one sided as there is no need to see the back) I suggest you follow a house tutorial for your 1st house. You can get a feel for what all you need to do, before you try to go solo.Trust me when I say you will end up painting yourself into a corner and just have to start over anyways. (lots to know) One trick you could try if you're dead set on using a wall you like ... is to find that form from the search right click it go to USED or USE I forget (it's the one on the bottom) used in or something like that ... :Pdouble click one of the cell it's used in and see how they made a top for it ... BUT !!!!! once you do that you will add bad data to your mod. So don't save or use TES5edit to remove the dirty edits.Sometimes you can get away with no doing that by turning off the grid option and making damn sure you don't move anything ... you will know you messed up if you see a * after the cell name. When I do this kind of stuff I save 1st ... then boldly go look around knowing I will have to exit and reload the kit without saving. But it's really easy to remove dirty edit with TES5Edit.If you don't know how to use TES5edit or don't have it I also suggest you get that before attempting to make a mod. It's a life saver. Pretty much a must to clean you mod before uploading. Edited July 22, 2016 by NexusComa
jackofnothing
Thanks for the reply. Never even crossed my mind to flip it lol >_< I did watch/read a couple house tuts to get the basics, but they were all farmhouse blah blah blah >_> I didn't want to make a basic house or even use those kit pieces for most part. Just seems like the easy way out.. Haven't been able to find any good tutorials on making a house piece by piece. I've cleaned it with TES5edit already but still have an * after the cell name. I'm 90% sure it had that when I first made the cell. No idea what it means. Didn't think anything of it. Basic idea of what I was attempting:http://s260.photobucket.com/user/Immoral_album/media/Untitled.gif.html
NexusComa
Yep ... Build that farm house, go through the whole thing each video ... You can scrap it when you're done. Trust me when I say the things you will learn hands on will save you months later ...Also the * means you have edited that cell ... your own cells should have the * ... I was talking about any other cell that isn't one of yours ... (exp: one you pop in to see how things were done) I made 3 homes, all 3 had to be deleted due to errors I made while creating them. Made the tutorial home and never had a problem again. Time well spent ... Edited July 22, 2016 by NexusComa
jackofnothing
I'll take your word for it and go ahead and follow those tuts then. Thanks for your help.
NexusComa
Yes flipping the form works well. Just make sure you zoom in enough to see if you filled all the cracks. If you have cracks it will kill your fps.

Not all meshes are designed to be seen from both sides, most walls are like that they have only one visible surface, look from other side and you can see right through it. You'll need a mesh thats designed to be seen from either side or add a separate "ceiling" below the "floor". Stone floors typically are one-sided, whereas wooden floors i.e. the upstairs in Breezehome, are designed to be seen from below as well as above and indeed there are gaps in it which means you can see through the floor to the room below. Thats not necessarily a good thing though because it means the game engine has to render both rooms at once which can lead to performance issues. With "solid" floors you can optimize with occlusion planes etc between walls and floors.
NexusComa
Very true, however, being able to see through the cracks sometimes looks sweet. Like in Breezehome, where the cracks were by design. The cracks I was talking about was cracks that show through to nothingness. Making the render test deeply for other objects that are not even there. You will notice when there is no way around that in the kit they use a BlackPlane01 form. So the render don't have to test an "infinity crack". It also stops you from seeing the more lit up area of the nothingness because the plane is black. Sounds like you're starting to look around at the other cells to learn how they did things ... good for you !!Just make sure after looking you don't see the * after the cell name. Or you have to reload the whole kit like I was talking about before.Always save before you go looking, so you don't lose any of your work from this. (or use tes5edit to delete them "dirty edits" out) Edited July 23, 2016 by NexusComa
thumbincubation
Try ShipKatariahWoodFloor01 (or 02-05, but I've never found much difference) for a nice hardwood look, that's opaque from both sides and matches along the edges.
agerweb
Another trick is to take a 2 sided floor and swap the textures for ones you want. Bit more involved though, but good for adding variety. I use it a lot.
