CTD at startup - even with no mods enabled :(

Hi folks,

first of all: Please excuse my english.

So atm I've some serious problem with my FONV. It simply crashes at startup :(

So, since this is not so uncommon while using mods, I used FEVEdit to hunt f.e. a missing master-file, wrong load order, etc.

But I didn't find anything. Everything looks okay in that tool

As next step, I tried the good ol' "Start with no mods, then enabling a hand full - if it works: enable the next few" method.

This method worked well many times while hunting for a mod causing problems.

But this time: The game even crashes without any mod enabled :ohdear:

It's annoying...

So my guess is: The CTDs is the product of some corrupt file - but I don't know what I should look for.

The game worked fine a few days ago (played it last time on friday) and I didn't changed much since.

Anyway, maybe some genius has an idea :(

These are the files modified after the last playing session:

These are the files newly created after the last playing session:

http://i0.simplest-image-hosting.net/thumbnail/error-4.jpg

One of these must the reason for the crashing.

Maybe some more experienced user could tell what type of file usually causes troubles like this? :(

My fist bet would be a XML-file, but I didn't do anything HUD-wise.

Thanks for the hint. I'd forget the "My Games" directory completely :wallbash:

The only file in there possibly responsible for the crash seems to be the FalloutPrefs.ini (rest of the recently edited/added files are just savegames).

It's the only ini-file changed during the last five days and this was not by hand (I'd sure remember that)

No *.ini or *.xml file was changed / added in the main folder of the game (except for the BOSS.ini, which can't be responsible).

So, if the FalloutPrefs.ini is the reason for the crashing... what should be my next step? :ohdear:

Um... this thing drives me insane :psyduck:

So after that useful tip I copied and deleted the Fallout.ini and the FalloutPrefs.ini from the \My Games directory, hoping the newly created files would fix that issue.

And they didn't... :ohdear:

Then I had another look (again) on the pics above. It doesn't make any sense, a simple *.nif or *.dds can't cause a CTD ._.

I already de- and reinstalled unified HUD, because I thought it may cause the problem.

Other games I've tried (atm only Shogun 2, Nehrim and Drakensang 2 on this PC) work very well/as always.

Reinstalling the game wouldn't be that painful... but all of the mods sure would be... :(

Any idea what I else I could try? :ohdear:

Maybe this info is of some use: Usually the Sound/maintheme starts as soon as click on the fakefullscreen.exe but now there is a small delay of 1 to 2 seconds.

I didn't change anything driverwise or filterwise concerning the sound of this PC. But still: It seems kinda strange as the crash-message appears as soon as the sound starts.

(Oh, I forgot: The games doesn't actually CTD, a Windows-error-window occurs - looks like this:

actually gamecrashes arent really that rare for Fallout 3 and NV, even without any mod installed or any other changes to the game, like uncut patches or language changes. I mean, google for "Fallout 3 crash" and the browser releases a true stampede of resultpages^^

With those other games running well i guess its no hardware problem, hm? Do you have any kind of gpu temperature program like speedfan or GPU-Z to check your general gpu temperature at standby level (desktop without any running game) and the increase of temperature when starting 3D games?

Perhaps there was a windows update the last days wich changes something fallout didnt agree to?^^ or some driver update in the background wich you didnt notice..or a virus/malware infection wich causes the game to crash?

I guess it's no hardware problem, since Nehrim (being an Oblivion overhaul) uses the same engine as FONV :ohdear:

And at least Shogun 2 needs by far more "power" to run smoothly compared to FONV.

FONV was running almost perfect on this machine until last Friday (well, the last Friday considering the starting post of this thread).

I'll try a sloppy workaround smearing the last patch over the game as it is as soon as I have the time.

Reinstallting the whole game + 796558755476 mods/replacers/textures, etc. would only result in bad temper :psyduck:

If this would be the only way, I'll switch over to Skyrim, since I only reinstalled FONV for LR.

edit: Patch worked :)

The *.exe itself seemed to be broken.
