Bethesda rendered ALL of Tamriel?

I wonder if its possible to "transfer" everything from oblivion into the skyrim world map..? Then maybe give everything a next gen "update," swap out the bulk of the old textures with the skyrim ones, grass, rock etc replace all the trees.. It would be a huge undertaking tho, and im sure anyone with the know how has got better things to be doing with their time lol

I don´t think that is a sign of a coming DLC or expansion (sorry guys) but quite some other form of foresight from Bethesda.

They know allready, that ES Gamers are curious people and also tend to be...lets say demanding. Its a no brainer that somebody will have to idea to say "hey whats beyond that point where i cant go?". Since a non penetrable invisible Wall or black/white void or any limitation whatsoever would break the illusion of a "freemove world", they put a little effort to make some generic landscapes that also fits to the location.

Bethesda gets many things right...we tend to overlook that sometimes.

Just to reiterate something I posted in the other forum...

Theres a quest for Daedric god Merida that takes you up into the air for a period of time. The renders of the landmass were almost certainly for quests such as that - on a good day you can see those provinces.

The DLC thing is a pipe dream, most likely they will release DLC in the same vein as Fallout and whatnot. The landmasses aren't even accurate compared to the original Oblivion - so "overlaying" the old game won't work either.

That seems like a lot of work just to have a quest in the air. It would be much simpler to have the quest above the clouds, rather than using countless man-hours to design terrains you'll never use again. I'm thinking there are other purposes to developing those areas.

I don't think people realize the amount of work that goes into populating an entire province with NPC's, dungeons, items, vegetation, rocks, roads, towns etc. It is very, very, very unlikely the upcoming DLC's are going to be anything even remotely approaching that scale.

My guess is, as the others have mentioned, that the landmass is there for LOD purposes, that is to present the player with a long distance view from certain vantage points. You had the same thing in Oblivion, I remember turning off invisible borders and just walking around in what was technically Elsweyr. But since Oblivion didn't have the sort of vantage points Skyrim has, there was no need to render the landmass to that sort of distance.

There are other issues with the Skyrim landmass, for example Red Mountain is cut literally in half. This also tells you that it's there for background purposes only. I'm afraid we are not looking at Daggerfall 2.0 here.

I *really* hope their 'fewer, but much larger' DLC for this game will be the recreation of these old provinces allowing us to revisit them with better graphics, new creatures, etc. Heck, even if there are only the radiant story quests generated in each area, just being able to explore them would be nice.

If these had anything to do with DLC I am guessing you go to certain, important places in each country where you fight off the Thalmer. Something like fighting the Thalmer at the White Gold Tower, or taking the fight to the Morrowind volcano.

Actually you could probably count the amount of hours pretty easily. Making the rest of tamriel the way it is in skyrim with limited textures and quick details would take a team a week (maybe) if they already know the world and how to make it, which they do.
