neiro3
Hello. I seem to have reached some limit as to how many mods I can have active at once! When launching the game it'll exit after briefly showing the first load screen. If I remove a single mod, regardles of which, it'll work again. If I remove one, and enable another it'll still work as well. A google search didn't reveal anything that was related to my problem. You guys know? ps trying to activate some 2-300 plugins at once. 3.4ghz c2d, 3gb ram, 8800gtx & game isntalled on a raptor. Should be able to handle at least some of the mods, although I doubt at reasonable fps with em all active. Regards,

Regards, Regardless of how powerful your machine is Oblivion has a hard coded limit of 255 plugins. This is disputed by some but has been stated as fact by many of our communities top modders and though I have never tested this myself I'm am inclined to believe the majority on this one. As for googling information on Oblivion, there is no need to waste your time. This community has spent much effort putting down in writing almost everything about modding Oblivion on a site provided by Bethesda's Parent company Zenimax. The Elder Scrolls Construction Set Wiki is the definitive source of information on Oblivion and the next time you have a question about modding go there first. If Oblivion modding was a religion this would be your bible. Learn It, Love It, Live ItAnd good luck to you.
Xeniorn
I am not sure about Oblivion but I remember Morrowind has a limit of 200 or so .esps and .esms loaded. It sounds pretty reasonable to be true. Of course you could circumvent that problem by merging some of the .esps (or all of them for that matter - but with so many of them I doubt none of them harmfully conflict with each other) Also FPS reduction shouldn't be that great as the number of mods isn't a big factor for FPS. It all depends on the nature of the mods you are using. But if you usually play with 60FPS it shouldn't drop below 50% ( unless you are using some mod that fills the world with clutter and super high resolution textures, or a CPU hungry script or something like that) EDIT: sorry about this, my post only came through in 1:38 although I posted it much earlier.
Vagrant0
It's actually 254, but more like 253 or less since you'll occasionally get a mod which for one reason or another takes up multiple slots (probably due to bad merging (more common with older mods it seems)). The reason is because 255 is the highest number which can be expressed in hex (FF) and Form IDs for mods can only be expressed in 8 digits (the first 2 being the mod order, the later 6 the id of that object) due to one of those complicated computer things (simplifying it for you). However, ideally you don't want to have more than 100 or so mods installed and running at any one time due to all the potentential conflicts which will occur, and having a load order which might be hard to manage. You can go over this quite a bit if you're using alot of simple mods, like those that add equipment or basic companions, but with anything that adds or changes anything, you'll eventually have problems just from minor conflicts. Having fewer mods active can also increase performance, or make it easier to track down bugs and issues as they happen.
neiro3
Thanks for all those productive replies. One byte is a rather limiting factor, and kinda defeats the idea of those m.o.e. packs, but oh well. Now I at least know why it keeps acting up. Guess I'll have to restrain myself. ps. most of the mods make small and rather insignificant changes, like adding another house or so. I'm still learning how the mod manager's conflict manager works, but that takes time. btw. about fps - at 1280x800 I am frequently getting fps drops down to 1fps (from ~40). Appearently I'm running low on texture memory or something like that. Not sure exactly. Will figure it out tomorrow ; car broke down this morning ; new priorities are set. Read this thread, Running oblivion smoother? and follow the link there to one of the best mods ever and it is right up your alley.
