Follower's level and statistics.

Good find - although I have a question, did you only test with Lydia?

I ask because I've read here (and on Bethsoft official forums) of people stating that other companions are leveling and gaining appropriate stats and skills as they level up. They reported that Lydia was bugged and wasn't doing this - obviously using the workaround you posted will work to correct Lydia (and any other follower's effected by this). So I'm just wondering if you tested with any other followers other than Lydia or just with Lydia?

But still, good find - and maybe if someone has the time to test some of the other followers to confirm whether or not they are effected by the "Lydia" bug and whether this workaround resolves it for them as well?

I'll paste some conversation about the states from the UESPwiki Skyrim page on followers:

It's a mystery to me then what 'reference' stats are supposed to be for, since it seems the game ignores them I guess. It seems the intent was that your followers should level up with you, since they do increase in level after all and there are these (albeit seemingly useless) 'reference' fields which increase correctly, but the game is grabbing the actual health from the wrong spot.

I think the followers' BaseReferenceStat and their CurrentValue stat have been accidently swapped. Perform a Getavinfo <skill> on your own character and the BaseReference stat shows what you started the game with, current is what you have now. This is the other way around for followers and I presume this is why they don't level properly

In their hurry to get the game out (or some other reason) Bethesda had made the mistake of swapping over the BaseReferenceStats and CurrentValue of followers. If you check the stats for your character you'll find that the CurrentValue is your current stats and BaseReferenceStat is the value from when you started the game. This swap over is the reason for followers not increasing, it may be a bug, or something they may not had time to fit in. A few do level though, but most are prone to this problem. It can be summarised in this last post for UESPwiki follower's talk:

The Dark Brotherhood Initiate also seems to level with you fully, unlike Uthgerd who only boosts two of her parameters. It seems to me like someone messed up badly when setting followers up, probably in the haste to meet the deadline. I mean, why wouldn't full leveling like that be the devs' intentions? It's how it worked in FO3, and in NV - and Bethesda had to actually fix Sergeant RL-3 and Dogmeat to level with the player because fans got angry that they DIDN'T level. They know their fanbase hates non-scaling followers - especially non-essential ones! - why would they implement them again, and in such an asinine way as to punish heavily those who like to explore (and thus activate the followers at low levels), which defeats the purpose of an open world? I like to think bethesda has more common sense than that, this has to be an oversight, especially since a few followers DO level up (very slowly) their skills.

Maybe us here at Nexus could further investigate this, and possibly a Mod could fix this within the future. I'll happily look further into the game mechanics and probably will anyhow. Such things fascinate me. :woot:

I was using only generic "throwaway" followers (ie, the dark brotherhood nameless assassins) for this reason. Killing one and picking up its magic replacement was my "fix" so far.

Good to know I can go back to followers with a name (if no more personality, sadly..)

TS: Thanks for sharing! UESP is a golden nest in terms of information for stuff like this :)

Sorry for going a little bit off topic, but at since it's at least follower-related, i'll give it a whirl. On the topic of follower personality, what are you guys experience with your follower's comments to various situation?

I've found that most don't say much, except for a few static lines such as "I have a bad feeling about this" when approaching certain encounters, . The most talkative one so far for me has been the spellsword in Solitude (The old guy, Belrand). He has a lot (well, in contrast to the "Hey, watch it" you get accustomed to hearing over and over with many of the fellas) to say when you venture in to caves and dungeons, which I rely like. I'd really appreciate you guys opinion on this - what NPCs do you enjoy having with you, and have you found that some have more to say than others? If so, please share. :-)

(Realize I maybe should post this in a separate thread, but I don't want to clutter the forum up. Let's see what people think)
