Salvage Stations - Why Are You Farms

So I have been running experiments in FO4 to try to suss out how Settlement Building can be done as effectively as possible and to make my settlements as functional as possible. Sanctuary is my major trade hub where all Supply Line come from so that I know all of my other settlements have supplies, It also produces over 120 water which until earlier today I thought would keep any other settlement from needing water. Starlight Drive-in has both Deathclaws for entertainment and Brahmin for fertilizer. Sunshine Tidings is where I send robots I no longer love. And last but not least Red Rocket exists as a testing grounds for the most important item in the freaking game.... The Salvage Station.

The Wikia claims that instead of finding 1 Junk Item per day that any unemployed settler will find 2 Junk Items a Day which means twice as productive and not as much money diverted from my poop to jet trade making it so I can fund my empire off the back of Myron (May he rest in peace).

So every day I go to the Red Rocket in order to collect what they have found and place it somewhere else (Sanctuary normally). What I am finding since I started paying attention though is something like 2 tatos and 1 corn, or 10 Water 1 mutfruit or some annoying monstrosity like that.

I must be doing this wrong... Salvage Stations are meant to give me junk items... is the close by proximity to Sanctuary (Where lots of Water, Mutfruit, Corn, and Tatos are grown) causing problems? Could it be an issue with the Trade Routes? Why is Red Rocket Salvage a Farm?

Couple of things ... Firstly Supply Lines DO NOT supply settler required consumables such as food and water. They will ONLY supply items for crafting NOTHING MORE. You can have 100000 food items showing in your Workshop Inventory, but unless you assign a settler to a plant, they will not get fed.You also MUST install water supply items for each and every settlement, or the settlers will have no water, REGARDLESS of how much water is in your Workshop Inventory.

Ignore the fact that the numbers are no longer red, you will still need to assign food production and a water supply to each settlement. Again I'll reiterate that Supply Lines are ONLY there for the Player Character to use/craft/build with, nothing more.

Unassigned Settlers will "scavenge" for ... crap.= Whatever the settlement needs, so in the case of a settlement with not enough food or water, guess what they'll collect? Otherwise they will scrounge for "building material;s" - which means assorted crap, but only in fairly small quantities, and ONLY in "REAL GAME TIME" Resting/Sleeping for 24 hours will not work, you have to actually stay awake and in the game doing ... something, for that time to elapse.
