Improving Skyrim's animations and facial expressions

I don't know if it would even be possible to mod things like this in, but the animations and details of Skyrim could really use some work. For instance, if I draw a sword and slash someone without a helmet across the face, there should be a cut at the same spot that even follows the blade, if they have a helmet sparks should show following the sword same as the blood. In either case, the enemy's reaction to being slashed across the face should also be approprate, their head should turn away from the blade as they are being hit, a lot like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sXJ0ZvRPHs and after being hit if their health isn't too low (in which case falling to their knees is fine) look enraged and attack (wish I knew of a clip somewhere that shows that). Aside from the combat, the animations for Skyrim in general need work, people's actions and facial expressions don't really match the emotions of the words their words convey, in short, they sound happy but don't look happy, sound angry but don't look angry.

To be honest, if one was designing a game themselves to have this then it would be a matter of abusing decals and particles at the right events. Possibly even looking into deform-mesh with shaders and interchangeable bumpmaps/textures.

Shouldn't be any more difficult than most of the suggestions on this forums, once the creation kit comes out and the mod tools mature.

why don't you go to the official skyrim forum and ask bethesda why their animations suck so much? if nobody gives them feedback on it, then they will just assume that it was fine and use it for their next game. nobody complained about fallout's animations. and so the style didn't change

I don't create mods myself so I didn't really have any idea if this could be done when I originally posted it but I'm glad to see that it is possible. Actually, the lack of proper animations don't really bother me personally, but I've noticed that poor animations have been one of the most consistent things various skyrim reviews seem to complain about, so I'm guessing this kind of mod would be a big hit.

It will be tough to actually do. Though I believe facial animations should be a bit easier. I myself was thinking of improving the dragon's animations so that they can convey a wider range of facial animations like eye brows, blinking, eye movement, etc.

Ya a lot of the animations in the game are really poor. They seem to have added the finishing moves that are all the rage these days but they forgot to pay any attention to the basic walking, fighting, riding animations. Several of these will need to be fixed and I am sure that the community will get it done as soon as the construction set comes out. I would like to see the walking up and down stairs animations fixed as well as the front legs of the horses...just terrible. I also believe that Bethesda must know that they have skimped out on most of Skyrim and are well aware of all the substandard work in the game. They did just enough to get the game released and no more. Bethesda and their devs. aren't interested in hearing any criticism. They had an entire community of folks dedicated to this game who are more than capable of making anything in the game that the programmers and the devs could make. We told Bethesda repeatedly and systematically for two years what we wanted to see in Skyrim and how they could improve the next release over Oblivion. They have totally ignored all of that advice and somehow managed to screw up many of the things that everyone liked and which worked well......... so go figure that one out.
Is that a real poncho or a Sears poncho?
