Skyrim Multiplayer Mod

So I'll state this first: I know little about mods and almost nothing about how to go and create them (as well as most things about computers).

So with that being said...

My question is why aren't people able to take a single player game add whatever it is that needs to be added to make a game multi-player-compatible

and make their own servers for said games? Even for just 3-4 people.

I understand that it would take A LOT of time, as well as powerful computers to run the servers... but is it not possible? Would you basically have to

rewrite the entire game to do this?

Or is it just something like being against the games EULA, TOA, or whatever they have?

I'm just curious if it would be in anyway possible to have a server with 3-4 of your friends playing on it for Skyrim (or any game in general).

At least for online mutliplayer, its definitely more of a case of "you have to rewrite the entire game" to handle it. I think not quite so much for local multiplayer. Don't really know though, I've only dabbled in Flash game development.

I'm with you on totally wanting it though. Maybe someone will figure out a way.

Mhmm. I'd much rather play a SMO (Small Multiplayer Online, if those even exist) game than a MMO.

Skyrim with a very small amount of people (3 minimum 10 maximum) would be so much better than games like... well... any MMORPG I can think of.

In skyrim it can be done. would requre some hard coding. an server would send render info and sync the players. That is easier than done extremely. coding of AI would have to be redone or modifyed heavy so each player is treated differently. Once you got a working code for server side is done now the client side must be scripted to sync with sever. Muliplayer mods for skyrim are POSSIBLE but require serious decication and effort. and I know we will see multiplayer. but will not be any time soon. it will be years away. this is only a guess.

perhaps Skyrims mod tools are extremely more capible and muliplayer is possible with this "new engine". and maybe they show PC users more love by providing a lot of freedom with modding tools since they created the engine ground up.

I seem to remember a mod for oblivion that made the game co-op, but it had horrible camera controls and cuased a tpn of problems. Also there was a mod for oblivion that allowed up to 16 players to play at once but all the other players had really bad animations and were called "Stranger". But the online mod required you to play the game with certain mod activated and ony those mods or you would be inconpatible with the other players.

So i think that if they were to make a multiplayer mod it would have to be a co-op version and not an online version since online play would cuase to many problems with a game that can be modded like Skyrim.
