Imperials/Stormcloaks hostile after Main Questline

I have had this strange bug in my game ever since I first started playing, which has been years since then, that I have managed to find no solution for and no other examples of other people having it.

After the completion of the main questline, either the stormcloaks or the imperial legion becomes unreasonably hostile. I have done nothing in the civil war, and committed no crimes, but one side or the other wants to kill me for no reason. It's completely random which side actually becomes hostile, but it's a guaranteed bug for me on every save file I make. Usually I can either join the hostiles' side in order to calm them or I'm joining the non-hostile side anyway, but the bug still presents major issues if I don't want to do the Civil War questline. In the past, I have been able to use the "player.paycrimegold" command to fix it, but that has inexplicably stopped working. I doubt a mod is causing this, as I have had this glitch since before I started modding my game.

The bug is not fixed by USLEEP, and according to both the TES Wiki and the UESP Wiki, the bug doesn't exist. I have seen no other instances of this happening across the entire internet despite days of searching.

So can anyone please tell me what's going on?

I think after completing the Season Unending quest, your standing with either the Imperials or the Stormcloaks decreases depending on who you aided more in the negotiations, hence the hostile encounters. It's not a bug. Admittedly it has been a while since I've done the main questline, but I believe that may be the case.

In my most recent playthrough, I walked right through a civil war battlefield after Season Unending without anybody being hostile.

Although the the thing about my reputation with the factions does make sense to some degree. The problem is that I have done nothing for or against the Civil War factions. If Season Unending or any of the quests afterwards in the main questline can take the savior of the entire world from neutral to hated, that's incredibly ridiculous.

Perhaps you are accidentally hitting guards, or other faction members, repeatedly, while defending against threats such as vampires & thieves?

Actually, and this is not relevant to your problem: I intend to do a playthrough using that console command to make me a Forsworn in the future (non-Dragonborn). Well, not really a "playthrough," more like just play around with it. With the Stormcloaks, Imperials, and all holds hostile.

No hitting of guards at all. I have learned to be VERY careful about that in my years of playing this game. In fact, if Lydia doesn't aggro to whatever a guard/soldier is fighting, I kind of use that time to use healing hands/heal other on said guard.

In terms of your forsworn plan, I would recommend and non-dragonborn plan, I would recommend using Skyrim Unbound if it's still on Nexus. It can handle both of those set up goals very easily for you.

Yeah I am using Unbound in my current playthrough. However I have converted to dragonborn since low levels in my current playthrough, I wouldn't do that as a Forsworn.

I'm currently thinking (Forsworn playthrough) minimalist, no black books, no Dawngard, only wandering, Khijiit, or Orc traders & apothecaries; no bards college, and perhaps even no College oW quests or interaction. Should make for a tougher play - good. Thinking of possibly adding in survival mods too, such as campfires, eating and drinking, and Frostfall among others. And since I won't have access to holds, no point in trying to use the Hearthfire houses, (nor in-town houses) either.

EDIT: Actually I'm thinking of trying "Alternate start" instead in the Forsworn playthrough, because it gives me more fitting starting places/options (I think). I need to re-read about it first. I still have a lot to do in my present playthrough, I haven't explored most of the new content/places added by mods yet - so it will prob be months before I do this - I plan ahead LOL.

I wonder if I can befriend almost all the 'bandits', and attack just the Stormcloaks, Imperials, and hold guards (and of course dungeon monsters). I hope I don't run into any big "gotchas" in this attempt (keeping in mind not doing main quest lines, no Thieve's guild, and probably no DB).

TY anyway.

Most of the Main Quest is set up for you to be neutral or side with either faction in the civil war. But the one mission requires you to take a side. So, they still allow for flexibility until you finish the MQ. Then, the side you favored is "forced" as your faction unless you take steps to actively change it. Its sorta sloppy writing, but understandable.
