Are the Civil War quests and Main quests intertwined?

Hello, pretty much what the title says.

The character I'm playing now is not going to start the main quest until she's level 50, (41 or so atm.) so I won't have to deal with random ancient dragons owning me while I'm enjoying the scenery. P: I didn't get too far into the main quest on my other character before being eaten by a few ancients/elders (who for some reason start spawning around level 25? Despite them being like 40 or 50? xD Or so I've heard.) which made me start this character, so I'm not sure if they are intertwined or not.

This may seem like a silly question, but I guess I'm asking if it's required to fight any dragons? Or if I have to be on the main quest to do some of the civil war quests? I'm eager to get out there and fight for the Imperials, so I'm just curious. Thanks for any help, and excuse my rambling.~

All major questlines appear to be independent of each other, in that you can complete each faction's line without causing too much trouble for other lines. Continuity may seem a bit off in some cases depending on what side you take in the civil war regarding at least one other factional quest series, but from a technical aspect, you should be fine.

The only time the main quest and the civil war quest intertwine, is if you haven't won the civil war before convincing Jarl Balgruuf to lure a Dragon to whiterun, then you have to host a peace council at High Hrothgrar
