What the heck is going on with archery?

This particular combat system seemingly can't decide how it works.. or else I simply don't get it. From what I can tell so far (with over 100 hours of play) is that there is basically no arrow drop off, correct? Kind of a half-arse auto targeting thing.. whereas you do have to compensate for horizontal movement (i.e. shooting an arrow ahead of someone walking), for some reason the people at Beth thought it'd be a great idea to just throw arrow gravity drop off out the window, right? Who needs physics anyhow!

Well that's all fine and good after you get used to it, but even after this long playing with bows, I still don't get how long distance works. After a far enough distance it seems my arrows can never find their mark, no matter what I try (shooting directly at the target, shooting above the target, etc.) What the heck is going on? I want to be able to snipe creatures from far away, yet it seems that once I'm at a certain distance my arrows just stop working.

Frankly I wish they would have just done it normally.. with gravity being a factor and arrow drop off (seems like it would be a no brainer), then at least you could figure it out and judge for distance. But the weird arse way they decided to do this system... ugh... just can't figure it out. Eagerly awaiting a mod that will fix this rather lame (in my opinion) combat system of bows.

Any advice from you archers to handle this until an archery mod comes out?

Arrow gravity still very much exists. What makes you think it doesn't?

And it should be tough hitting a target from a long distance, especially if the target is moving horizontally. The physics of the arrow aren't going to impede your results to a degree that seems inconsistent; really, the only thing I'd change about archery right now is making arrows travel faster (but leaving its physics alone for the most part), but that's just a personal preference.

Good question and I wish I could get this figured out too. The so called automatic targeting..never seem to work right for me, after I advanced my archery skills. These last few days, I don't think it is working at all (which is just fine with me). While I was in game last night, I decided to try some long distance shots at some bandits on a tower..I did one shot to get my range and then adjusted for trajectory...and it worked. A manual shot. I love my archery, and I much prefer having manual shots, it is more of a challenge and you have to think. I did some more long distance shots later, this time moving, so I tracked my target, and again, most shots hit their target, you could see the arrow 'arch' through the sky and gave me great satisfaction that I could do it.

So I don't really know if the auto targeting is working or not, if so, I'd like to be able to turn it off. I can 'zoom' in if I want, but don't usually use if for shots..guess I'm just old fashioned...LOL!

you can edit your ini to make the gravity take effect, and you can also edit your ini to allow the arrow to go farther so you can 'snipe' people off in the distance you were never able to hit before

DUH! that never occurred to me. Thanks for that info. I'll give that a try, don't know why I didn't think of that before. Could be great fun...

i have that problem too, i google it and find this, still didn't try. but it doesn't hurt.

put this on Skyrim.ini, if you already have the [Actor] sentence, don't duplicate it.

[Actor]

fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000

supposedly the LOD is extended a little more, making the arrows give the target.

I hope it's useful.

Unless there is an actual bug \ glitch from your game preventing arrows from working, then it should function properly.

There is a quirk though. The arrows are sighted to hit the crosshair at medium distance. So for close to medium shots you need to aim LOW.

At long range you need to adjust as you normally would but keep in mind that medium distance is the crosshair. For VERY long shots I aim about 1 to 2 head lengths over the targets head.

What's kinda bothering me is that i can drop 5 or 6 arrows in a target ..kill it and go to collect my arrows and only get 1 back (sometimes none at all).allthough, most long distance sneak attacks allways give the arrows back..(well 90% i guess).....makes me mad when i can see 3 or 4 arrows sticking out of a corpse and nothing to pick up when i search the body....maybe someone could look into it...would be really nice to have it fixed.

OH yeah! I forgot about that one! I let go of 14 arrows into a dragon and only got two back..what's with that? I am constantly buying or collecting all the steel arrows I can get my hands on. So I'm with ya on this one. :verymad:
