khbazur
I have Lydia for my companion. I'm a sword and spell Heavy armor MageKnight. To use Lydia effectively you have to do the dismiss/disable/enable/follow me sequence to make her level with you. There is a bug where her starting level and current level values are reversed so she'll always be at the level when you first meet her. To effectively equip her you have to do the removeallitems command then give her the items you want her to use. To keep her at range and using a bow simply don't give her a hand weapon. Just remember to stock her with lots of your preferred arrows. She can go through 150 arrows very quickly. (ancient nord arrows are useful throwaway arrows for this. You'll never run out of them.) Still I miss the fallout companion wheel. and being able to set companion aggresiveness. Hopefully the CK will fix all that.
thewingedshadow
I play a stealthy wood elf archer, and I went through a lot of companions, but found them all useless. I stuck with Aela the Huntress for a while, because she almost looks like my character, she's just not an elf. However, she was talking too much and getting on my nerves. Also she got in my way a lot. I took Athis the Dunmer, from the Companions, with me at some point - and I'm never giving him up now. He suits my play style perfectly, he doesn't get in my way, he just stays right behind me, 'guarding my back', like he says himself. He doesn't talk much, only when being spoken to, and makes the ocassional comment about his surroundings. I like his voice a lot.He seems to have good stealth skills, since he's as hard to detect as me. He makes good use of the enchanted bows I give him, and when the enemies come into his face, he fends them off with sword and shield. And he's an elf, I'm an elf, so he's good company. At some point I chose to marry him and haven't regretted this choice to this very day. We make quite a nice couple in our dragonscale armor and ebony weapons.

darthsloth74
Well I hired Uthgerd and adventured with her for a long time. My character was a fighter and I figured another fighter would be total overkill. I was right but it was fun. Sometimes she'd hang back and use a bow, other times she'd get straight into smashing enemies faces in with a two handed axe. Great girl, bit ugly mind you, but tough as nails. Married her in the end, reasons a combination of her being a really tough woman and the fact that I love the sound of Claudia Christian's voice. Babylon 5 fan you see. It all ended very badly she got struck by lighting in a storm at least thats what it looked like and that was the end of her. Maybe it was a spell or something from an enemy, no idea. My character misses her she was great.
