Domascus
Does anyone else feel as though the magic system in Skyrim, compared to Oblivion, was a big step backwards? Aren't sequels supposed to expand on what they already had? I noticed that they removed the school of mysticism, but that doesn't bother me so much since most mysticism spells were just moved to alteration and restoration. What does really bother me, and no doubt bothers many of you is that they removed spellmaking. Spellmaking was one of my favorite things in Oblivion. Why remove something like that? In Morrowind and Oblivion, I played the wizard character, and I started out like that in Skyrim, but after about 7 or 8 hours, and realizing the limitations for magic, I switched to a stealth character. I'm not saying the magic system is terrible (it's better than any other game outside of TES series), it's just not nearly as good as Oblivion's. Oblivion's was nearly flawless. Sure, the spell effects look a lot cooler, and they added shouts, but if I can define Skyrim's system (again, compared to Oblivion), that word would be limited. PavelkCZ
Yes, definitely. Magic system in Skyrim is severely limited. No spellmaking, no usefull spells like Unlock, Telekinesis, Water walking and much more. Enchanting is terribly limited too.Basically, the whole magic system was reduced to healing, conjuration and several variants of shooting. :-(

Kazakovich
Yes, a sequel is a good opportunity to expand. But it's also a great opportunity to trim down stuff that didn't really work. I remember being miffed at the removal of the spellmaker-feature, too, but they made a good enough case for themselves in one of the pre-release commentaries that I could approve of it. DarkGenius
That's exactly what I've been screaming in this forums since I played Skyrim the first time.. you're supposed to be an Warrior not thief nor mage. I have writed this, in a similar post: Part I:I can't say that Skyrim is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than Oblivion or Morrowind, because these two have many things better than skyrim, still, skyrim is revolutionary. There is many spells that I'd never have expected from a TES Sequel, like transmute, Wards, Runes and such. But Bethesda disappointed me, as I play mostly as Battlemage, Sorcerer and Mage. The Spells system, the whole magic system is left off. They say there are over a hundred spells, there's no such thing! there only stronger versions of vanilla spells, and some are annoying miscellaneous like the Telekinesis. You don't know how much I loved mysticism.. Telekinesis was my beloved spell.. they KILLED IT.. I used it for opening doors, catching stuff from distance and throwing it there, placing this here and that there. Do you know what Telekinesis do in Skyrim? We lift stuff with KILLING Intent. It's no longer a tool, its a weapon. That really made me say "I expected more" Did you people Join the Bards College? You can do Nothing more than recover a few instruments and do a Exploring in an Dungeon (I hope they make an DLC for that faction, to add more stuff, like the ability to use instruments that was my whole point of joining that faction) There's no Spellcraft in this game, I.. can't express my disappointment with it. Made me feel like there's no place for mages in skyrim, y'know? spell system is disrespected, telekinesis which was a tool for exploring, attack and distracting is useless, y'know you could place something on the ground and and lift it with telekinesis, throw it to make Enemy NPC go searching it, while we ambush them. In Oblivion. Part II:How can one say the Magic System is better? BETTER HOW... no "spellcraft." How are we supposed to experiment Magic now? Increase Skills? Turn into a Dragon-Exterminator-Spell-Weaving-Mage without their own set of spells? That was dumb from Bethesda to remove the Spellcraft, they hid it in mystery. They kept it really hidden, Maybe they'll release an Magicka DLC? something that brings spells like Silence? Bound Armor? Daedra Summoning? Maybe bring back Spellcraft that would definitely save the life of Mages and Wizards of Skyrim? I'm sorry if there's some people that disagree, but in my experience this Magic System is ridiculous.. simple ridiculous. Being a Master of all the Arcane Arts, and have have the inability to create/design my own spells is simply frustrating experience of all Magic Learners in the TES Sequel. What did they think It would be? There aren't many Mages in SKYRIM, the EMOTION, the RAGE, the ADRENALINE that one gets from Combating a Dragon up close, is worth the sacrifice of Mage players in Skyrim? They didn't fairly earn the Game of the Year. Why do we have to pick sides? as the almighty Dragonborn can be, why doesn't them allow us to Wipe every faction and Build an whole new Faction with the Dragonborn calling the shots? I'm not some Corrupt Empire Slave to gave away my honor as Dragonborn and Master of the Arcane to be called simply as Legate, nor an Traitor, to betray my ideals and build an Ignorant Nord Kingdom. I wish I could be free, but the only way is to serve one or other. Isn't it simply frustrating? It all seems an embellishment to erase Magic from the game, it looks. I'm thinking of Joining the Aldmeri Dominion, they may have spellcrafting in their Capitals. Tired of Nords and their True Nord code of Ignorance. Alchemy doesn't allow us to experiment (Failed Results are completely deleted, so the effects must be completely exact to be worth something in effort, resume: No Experimenting) Enchanting, I'd like to know how would disenchanting break Items, since Magic is Energy and can't be treated like any Materia (physical substance) They invented a way. I think Bethesta is composed of Scientists, they simply do love inventions, and if there's something New, they copy it. I really would like them to be historians for a change. Are they trying to compesate roleplayers with Graphics? For a roleplayer what matters is Roleplay Quality, not Graphic Quality. The history of The Elder Scrolls is composed of Roleplayers, the MAIN point of RPG is Roleplaying. The new spells are Shiny, Glowy, to simplify; AWESOMIFIED (I don't believe that word exists, but it fits) No way a game can be good with more graphics in exchange for playability. Above is the copy of my previous comments on how I dislike the magic system on Skyrim. Thank you if you had the patience to read them. Magic is being slowly, flushed away. How are we supposed to play this game? Grab an Greatsword and go Dragon-Swing? I have always played as Mage, Sorceror and Battlemage in all of TES Sequels, I loved to know that there was an College at Skyrim, so I visited it, poorly quests, 7 or 6 quests. Sincerely, DG. Lokiron
I play a stealthy mage and I like some aspects of the system. I focus on Illusion which I find works as it should.Alteration took a hit and has become really, really boring. I liked this a lot in Oblivion with its many fun utility spells. Now? Armor spells and detect. Not even elemental resistance!Conjuration has no Bound Dagger (I need SNEAK ATTACK!!) and no armor either. (Have not used summons much)Destruction is underpowered as far as I've heard. The fact at you can dual wield spells is really sweet, and makes for some fun combination especially with Illusion, but the dual cast is too expensive. The two things that bug me the most are related; not enough spells and no spell creation. Few spells would be acceptable if you could make your own and a plethora of spells would render creation unnecessary.
