Thrown into the Bowels of Silence!

I have been playing this epic storyline since Morrowind. Until now, I have had nary the whisper of an issue nor have I launched any complaint. I'm the guy who would eat the burnt Dominoes Pizza without so much as a phone call to the manager. But honestly, I can't play the game without sound!

I have been playing for about six days now. Then, suddenly, though I hear the mighty drums of war behind the Bethesda logo...once the game begins to load...nothing. Not a whisper of sound. I have read almost every thread Google thinks would be helpful. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the game and any relevant audio drivers. I have changed the sound card settings (44.1, 16-bit, 48.1, 24-bit, blah, blah, blah). I even went so far as to switch out sound cards.

I am a composer/studio drummer and I have a fairly sophisticated sound system workflow that's much to complicated to go into any detail here. Just know that I had been playing the game (and every other one including Fallout: NV, Rift, Hunted, etc.) without consequence. Yesterday, the sound I had been enjoying in Skyrim (particularly the epic score - thank you, Jeremy Soule!) just crapped out. No reason for it. I read that downloading and unpacking the Morrowind .bfa thingy would help. Can anyone verify this?

Does anyone know if Bethesda is going to address this - or, better still - has anyone modded for this problem recently?

Since everyone lists the specs of their system in posts like this (and against my better judgement) I will follow suit:

HP Pavilion HPE h8se

GeForce GT440

Intel Core i7-970 six-core 3.2GHz, 1.5MB L2 + 12MB shared L3 cache

12 Gig RAM

1.5T HD

Realtek HD Audio*

*I am using m-audio fast-track pro midi/audio interface with pro tools 9: hd for input and output therefore bypassing the Realtek issues altogether.

Thanks for your help!

I imagine you have, but did you attempt doing anything else - playing a non-Bethesda game, listening to music, etc.? Perhaps your sound card died.

First I've heard of this one but it sounds like a Codec issue, Beth games have never cared much for some audio codecs for some reason. Only advice I can give, admittedly weak, is to try re-verifying your cache at Steam, even though you have reinstalled the game re-verifying sometimes corrects issues anyway.
