Personal Thoughts on Skyrim

First, let me talk about Oblivion. Oblivion was great. It was the first modern game I started playing, and it wowed me wholeheartedly. When I started, I had Shivering Isles and all those yummy mods. I recount spending tons of time installing mods and trying to make my own mods (bad mods, now in retrospect). Of course, there were flaws, but the game was great, and I was enraged when Fallout was released when I was scouring the interwebs for info on Elder Scrolls V. Yeah, I like Fallout in the end.

Skyrim. First of all, I want to say, the game is awesome, and I give it, say, 9.5/10. It will probably go up to 10/10 when the mods roll out. (Ok, 1000+ are out. But with creation kit not out yet, the heavy mods are not out yet. So in essence, the mods "for realz" have not shown themselves yet.) With like 5 years in between Elder Scroll games, saying that this 5th Elder Scroll game is going to be big is more or less and understatement. Let me start out by what I like.

Obviously, I love the large game. The many locations. For the few saying "zomg oblivion haz moar locations dan skyrim", realize that that is merely the number of fast travel markers. Many dungeons are cookie cutter variety for Oblivion, while the dungeons in Skyrim vary. And I thought the dungeons were good in Oblivion. Now I see Skyrim. Whoa, baby. I love the combat. The combat in Oblivion, while fine, isn't really that good. The melee part, for me, was just block, then attack. The player is encouraged to block until being hit, then counter by whacking the enemy a few times, then blocking again. That's a bit inadequate, even for awe-struck me. After all, the game really centers around combat. Why do you explore? Why do you make money? To be the baddest knight in Tamerial. In Skyrim, the dual wield has me in a dream. The power attacks are actually something I really want to use all the time now. The leveling system makes more sense to me. (In Oblivion, to have max levels, you actually had to make your "specialized" skills as low as possible. WHAT?) The perks system is great. I love the constellation perk interface. I like how there are more than a few voice actors this time around. And DRAGONS. YEA! The new skills are good. I can't really argue with the removal of some of the skills from Oblivion either. Some people don't really like the shouts, criticizing for the long cooldown times and their "uselessness". I disagree. If I could spam Shouts like I'm in an argument, I'd make all dragons fall like cupcakes. Used correctly, and under the right time, quite a bit of shouts have use. A few, though, in my humble opinion, are not useful.

Now, let's talk about what I dislike. From a technical aspect, I am disappointed. Where are the fancy DX 11 effects? And what the hell are those blocky, ugly shadows? And only support for TWO CORES? COMON! I mean, I love this game, I love this company, but to be fair, that's sad. And the max support for memory at 2gb? I KNOW, many mods can fix the issues or help lessen the effects of problems in Skyrim. In Oblivion, there is the OBGE 3. In Skyrim, I'm gonna see SGE. Sure. But this doesn't give makers of this game the ability to make mistakes like this. Nobody is going to be able to release a "multi core" patch. For now, people are going to get CPU bottlenecked, unless they get like Core i5 2500k and OC it. The UI. Oh no. The UI is just bad. Really, I want to say that it's just feels like a console port. Making pots suck for me. I'm tired of clicking the ingredients, pressing R to craft, then pressing "ok" after the potion failed to be produced. The whole Skyrim-stuck-with-Steam thing is annoying me as well. The process of having Steam DOWNLOAD the game after I BOUGHT THE CD is just ASININE. I had to manually change things up to make it install from the CD. I sometimes feel like Bethesda is turning their back on PC people, when they release shady patches that lock modification of the exe. People, piraters are gonna pirate. You can't stop them. Trying to stop them is only going to piss of legit people like me. (The large address aware patch had to be changed to work again, fixing an oversite by Bethesda.) It makes no sense that people have to have internet to toggle offline mode on Steam.

Yeah, sure, my complaint paragraph is larger than my "in-awe" paragraph. But at the end of the day, I willfully overlook the negatives of this game and just enjoy the game that is Skyrim.

If I said everything, my post would be very long.

In short; Compared to other games, I'd rate Skyrim 8-9.5

Compared other TES games, I give it a 6.

I am playing the hell out of it tho, I can't complain too much.

Ever have a ridiculously pretty girlfriend or boyfriend, who was often fun, but there wasn't much else there? That's what Skyrim is starting to feel like for me.

Meh, there's just clunkyness in game. The Enchanting when it fails is a save destroyer. Marriage serves no purpose, and more often than not you are bottlenecked into one solution for the quest... not like fallout where you have the good ending, the bad ending, and most times an intermediate ending to every quest. Sometimes the chioces are not good or bad, but just different and that's why I like fallout so much, there's just so much grey in it... you can be a hero, but a d-bag at the same time, or a villian who takes mercy at times...

a lot of the guilds... OH GOD THE GUILDS.

Shoudl we even call them guilds? No. The mages guild is a JOKE. My god... what a waste of time. Four quests? Are you kidding me? And you don't even need to show signs of ANY magic use. At least in oblivion you had to be proficient in magic and magic related things to a degree to be able to go through with the quests. The Companions is finished quickly too... a werewolf in fifteen minutes. WOW. "We trust you enough to give you this gift.. even though we haven't memorized your name yet"... seriouslY?

Don't even get me started on the Dark Brotherhood. They hand you the GUILD LEADERSHIP on a silver platter. The thieves guild redeems the guilds for a bit, but not entirely, since you can't turn tail on them and betray them.

having a PROACTIVE world instead of a REACTIVE one. The world doesn't care ify ou are dragonborne, savior of the world, calmer of civil wars, or jesus himself... it will FORCE you to do what IT wants instead of having it REACT to what YOU do.

At least in Cyrodiil people recognized your triumphs and status when appropriate.

This game is honestly pretty with little substance, sure, it looks decent, but there is some serious balancing issues needed with skills and "classes". If my mage only does 120 dmg per attack, and my sneak character can do over 3K with the dark brotherhood gloves and daedric daggers, one shotting dragons... there is some serious issues with that. Warriors too, they far overpower mages. I realize this is barbarian land, but come on...

a DECENT game getting a SEVEN out of TEN from me.

MODS HELP US!!!!

If you are on console.... rest in piece, my comrades. Aetherius take you gently.

I'm happy it can be modded, but it shouldn't feel like it needs to be. I think I played Oblivion twice through before installing any mods, expansions too, and I was happy with it. For me, the only improvement here is the visuals, which are awesome compared to other TES, but really not too fantastic. Lots of those little hills called mountains are blocky in parts, the textures are pretty low-res, some interiors are sloppy, I could go on, others have.

I've gotten a lot out of past Elder Scrolls, so I expected a lot from this.

The Game is huge for one. The world is massive in scope, and the quests are pretty much endless. The combat is fluid, and character development is well thought out. I spent over 180 hours and 2 characters and still have not done everything in the game. Now that I got some of the main positives out the way let me point out the bad points..... SPOILERS...... AHEAD.......

First the game has many bugs since release. part of the reason i'm on my 2nd character already is that I found out the hard way when three fourths through the game that if you don't do things in a certain order in this game you will break some of the quests and will be unable to finish them, even on my 2nd character I have run into this issue on some minor quests. But for a completest like myself this is a horrible thing. There is a bug like when taking out a rival thieves guild and when you burn the banner if you watch it to long in that same cell area your game will freeze and you will be forced to shut your system completely down and restart. Now before people start saying thing upgrade your system, that is not the issue. I'm running I5 2500k cpu 16gb memory, GTX 570 SC, AND GTX 560 SC for Physics. The problem is like many games today released my developers the are released unfinished or in still beta stages. Although patches are common for games the extent of the issues games today are having on release are not, it is just laziness on the developers part to release the game when they can make the most money and to hell with the initial experience we will just fix it later after we get our money.

In this story your character is Dragonborn like Uriel Septim and so on. Your are the hero, master of the voice that is to save the world from the world eater. Many like myself was hoping in the end of the main quest that you would get some special armor, weapon and if you bartered the peace between the Imperials and The Stormcloaks around the Greybeards Round Table like I did when you returned they would crown you Emperor and maybe have one final battle where you drive the Thalmor from Skyrim, and perhaps later in a expansion take the Dominion on in a final war. But no that does not happen, you get no special armor or weapon for completing the main story, and you are still faced with the position of taking a side between the Imperials or the Stormcloaks, and lets face it anyone making it that far in the game know that both sides are horrible choices and completely unlikable. Many were disappointed in Oblivion because you were unable to become Emperor in that game, but in this game it lead you on till the end that you might be able too, and by all rights you should have had the choice. My last main Complaint why do 50% of the characters you have to encounter have to sound like a bad Arnold Schwarzenegger, once it was funny, after around 100 or so encounters it just gets annoying.

Bottom line the game is a beautiful world in which to explore, and the combat is solid, and the amount of quests is more than enough. The story on the other hand was a bit weak, end of main story was lame, Imperials and Stormcloaks unlikable and whiners, not enough of variety with voice actors, buggy game, and would have liked the choice to become Emperor.

PS. I also hate being forced to play this game on steam, if I wanted to play this on steam I would have purchased the download from them VS. buying the retail game disc. Also a sign that the game was not really ready for release besides the bugs is that the creation kit was not ready for release with the game.

Despite all this the modding community has been great and fixed many issues and oversights that the game developers have failed to address despite missing a creation set AKA TES Toolkit.

Yeah, that's what I hoped for too. The Fallout setting didn't even appeal to me until I gave it a try and was instantly awed by the choices and their impact. I still like Skyrim, but they carried the good old Bethesda bug of not having any influence over the world over. That's my major gamebreaker and not the lost options, since I always was more into roleplaying than number crunching anyway. But there are annoying issues that shout console port at you. The UI obviously wasn't optimised for PC and can turn out to be a major pain in the backside.

The bad points for me are:

- no spellmaker (and magic effects since the days of Daggerfall have gone down with each game)

- no attributes and their game influence (which allowed modification by spell or potion)

- an interface that screams "I am a console game!" at me (major point here)

- lesser number of equipment slots

- graphics which are fine for a console, but not so fine with DX11 around on PCs

- the teensy problem with 2 GB memory...

- weak daedric artefacts - they used to be something special, but many are lackluster in Skyrim (any mastersmith can make a better mace than Molag-Bal); I would have preferred them to have some unique effects instead of being so close to common gear

The good points are:

- very immersive world

- lots of not-so-generic locations

- the whole surroundings feel appropriate for the scenario...the architecture, the scenery, the snow, etc.; they did a similar job on Morrowind, which felt alien for me, and not like the standard european fantasy world

- great dragons (those combat animations and movement of them rock), the first in a game which look "real"

- the shouts, which give the nord scenario a certain flair - maybe it was intended to have less magic and more primal supernatural effects? (my favorite for a norse scenario would have been rune magic as in Arx Fatalis)

- the perk system, but then I am a huge Fallout fan (best remake/continuation of an older game I have seen), where perks are part and parcel

- many nice stories to follow, and continuing some of the lore of previous games

- you can actually play through as fighter, thief or mage, which is in most games impossible

- a huge number of quests, varying from short to lengthy

- the alchemy system was kept, although potions are very far from what they were in Morrowind *dreams about the 10.000 stat potions again*
