Why we remember Morrowind as the best

I hope an elitist mocks you in 2014

I started with Morrowind. So, I change favourite on what is GOOD, not what WAS good. There is a key difference.

auseno one could possibly like Morrowind or Oblivion more than Skyrim without having a memory distorted by nostaligia, right

Oh, of course not. Just the people who complain Skyrim is not Morrowind 2. Yes, they are here. Do not deny it. If you like Morrowind more than Skyrim. Good for you! Just stop spewing it all over the SKYRIM forums. We really don't care if you like Taco or Pizza best, here we deal in Kebab. Yes that example explains it.

And by "you", I do not mean you, more as in everybody who worship Morrowind and keeps comparing it to Skyrim.

Matth my friend this topic is about(more or less) why WE REMEMBER Morrowind as the best. I'm not saying it's the best(I just feel that way when I REMEMBER it). I mean, to be honest I haven't played Morrowind in almost a year now, but still when I think about it, knowing how Oblivion and Skyrim are and for the reasons I posted above and others, my brain likes it more, becouse it's a happy memory. Skyrim is not a memory(a thing from the past) as I am playing it now, I will play it tomorrow and god knows until when. It's a matter of tastes after all and people are just curious to see "why" and "why not" other like or don't like as much a game(comparing them is inevitable). All are great games, or else we would not be spending time reading and posting on these forums, right? You might see me and others posting in a topic called " Things I hate about Skyrim" and the next day or even a couple of minutes later in a topic that's called "Why we love Skyrim so much". The reasons are infinite and infinite(you can't count them...) is the number of opinions shared on these forums. Sometimes we might be part of the "mob" that likes a certain aspect of a game and sometimes we are in that little group of people that think that aspect is the worst part of the game.

And I answered my opinion. I played it as well, so I feel I am allowed to post.

It's really not my fault people reply snarky back, or disagrees. I simply think people put their "love" for older games, especially morrowind, into wrong use. Instead of cheering the memeories and playing the game, they use it as a pedestal where they want every other RPG to stand. In turn we get spam and opinion forced our way.

Do I find Morrowind a bad game? Not at all. I spent a good 10 houres wandering wild and killing guards since they had cool armor.

Did I prefer Oblivion? Yes. It was better in so many way, for me.

Do I prefer Skyrim over both? Yes. It is better in so many ways, and the rest can be modded.

Will I prefer the next TES game? I don't know.

But, yes, I do understand nostalgia. I will swear my life on The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time is the best game in the world, followed by Golden Sun and FInal Fantasy X. I then know that the only reason I like these games, is since they were revolutionary for me when I played them.

I still would never try to reason why Ocarina of time is better than whatever new Zelda game that is out. This is because it is the memory of the game, not the game itself, I enjoy. I love the game today, but that is still because of the memories.

It is that I feel so many of the morrowind fan forget. It is your memory of the game you cheer, not ours. This means pestering the world with how you liked the quest system is really not helping. You like the quest system since it was awesome when you first saw it, not because it was good. SOmebody else might mean otherwise.

So, I got nothing against Morrowind. Heck, I need to replay it someday for the giggle. However, do not look down on other games since they do not follow the same system. I like knowing where to go, instead of having to look up quests on the internet ( Look at old MMOs. Damn thoose quest logs!). So for me, Oblivion was an improvement to what you might say was a negative thing.

But, by all means. I will leave quietly, and you can all share cheering moments of nostalgia. Just promise me I won't see one of you start a: "What Skyrim needs than Morrowind had" topic. Pretty please?

I am sorry if I come off as offensive. Every second post I read got a nostalgic guy wishing morrowind 2. I am against forcing of opinions, so I am against that kind of things. I got nothing against the people playing it, liking it or the game itself for that matter.

Cheers,

Matth

As has been said in the opener. Morrowind was groundbreaking at its time. I played it quite a lot over the years. Oblivion totally wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't like the story and I really had the feeling, they took a lot out of the original concept at this time. I played it through quite a few times, but never as often as I did with Morrowind.

So I agree, being in awe of Morrowind is mainly due to a severe case of nostalgia.

But let me say this. Skyrim could be great if they hadn't made the same mistakes they already made with Morrowind. And that's the questlines and the linear campaigns. Back in 2002 I was thinking, oh well there's only so much you can do to make an AI recognise your achievements and the path you have taken. But that's no longer an excuse. Since then we have seen that dynamic campaigns and NPCs reacting to your actions are possible.

Skyrim is good, very good compared to recent titles. But there are quite a few things that cry room for improvement.

It's simply a matter of immersion. Morrowind drew you in far more than any of the other TES games... no other game yet has accomplished quite the same 'holy crap what a wide and wild and weird world' with a feeling of infinite potential and possibility. I guess it boils down to that feeling of wonder you got every time you played it.

Actually, I liked the quest system and quests in morrowind because they were good, too.

You're doing a great job of describing a small, specific minority of the group of people who enjoyed Morrowind. Please, keep going.

Eh, I was going to reply some more. But you know what, I'll let it pass. If you absolutely feel the need to ignore my point, then you may do so. I have voiced myself, with relevant points and even killed of any "You never played Morrowind!!" comment one might come up with.

Cheers,

Matth
