Preventing soul trap on a larger soul gem?

So I got the Soul Stealer perk that makes Bound weapons cast Soul Trap on enemies, and I thought yay, I don't have to worry about fiddling with the soul trap spell anymore. After happily decapitating spiders with a Bound Battleaxe, I discovered all my Black Soul Gems had petty souls in them, and I realized that was probably the worst perk ever.

Now is there any way to prevent a lesser trapped soul from going into a greater gem even if it's empty? If not, that would be an awesome mod.

yeah i hate accidentally filling a soul gem with a weaker soul. However I think since black soul gems are the only gems that can be filled with a human soul, then it should only be able to be filled with human souls...

Haven't tested this myself but I heard that if you drop the soul gem on the ground it will release the soul, then you pick it up again.

Nope, didn't work. Dropped a soul gem and picked it up again, and it still had the same soul in it.

Yeah, I can always use the console to get empty black soul gems to replace the ones that had petty souls in them. It's still less fiddling than with having to swap between a two-hander and a spell - or carrying around an entire armory and swapping between different weapons. I would endorse a mod that makes this tiny but important change.

i find this annoying too, but I find the effect and accompanying sound more annoying.

Each kill = SWOOOOOOSHHHH PfffffffTTTT

LOL

Yeah me too, I have a 1 sec soul trap enchant on my bow, which I don't use very often. If I suddenly find myself sneaking through the woods and I spy a wolf I'll take the bow out snipe it and scare the hell out of myself when the soul trap sound goes off.
