NVIDIA Low-Power State Fix

After encountering this rare error, I thought I might document it here.

I have a built from-scratch system with an NVIDIA GTS 450. Not the best card, but definitely able to run Skyrim on at least High. After updating my driver, my overall performance dropped. I tried just about everything to get it right again, to no avail. After I installed MSI Afterburner, I found the problem. My near-1gHZ card was running at 405 mHZ. Less than half of what it should have been getting (And around 15 FPS on High settings).

The card was permanently in its' low-power state (P3, I think) and was unable to get out of it, fortunately the fix was damned simple; Disable the card in Device Management and then Enable it. I suspect that restarting the computer may also work in certain cases, but not mine. And before you go blaming my other hardware (Like NVIDIA :dry:), my specs are;

  • AMD Phenom II 955
  • 10 GB DDR3 1033 (2x4 + 1x2, simply because I can :rolleyes: )
  • Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3

I'm now running on ultra with land shadows, tree shadows and a 80962 shadow map and getting ~56 FPS. Huzah :happy:
