Game crashes while saving after I remove a mod

Have got a problem today: I decided to uninstall the mod "Guards of Cyrodiil" and after doing that, the game starts crashing everytime I try to save (both normally or through Streamsave). I re-installed the game, tried to just disable the mod instead of uninstalling it completely, it has the same result: any time I try to save, crash to desktop. I could continue to play with this mod installed, but then there is a question: what if I install some other mod which I eventually dislike and decide to uninstall? Will this happen with any large mod I try to remove after installing, and do I have to keep them all forever or start the game from scratch? I can't go back to my save when I hadn't yet installed the mod, it was there from almost the beginning of the game, and I am already level 51, finished the main questline etc. Is there some way to remove this mod without losing the ability to save the game?

This can be normal when removing a mod during a playthrough. The normal thing is not being able to load a save, not not being able to save.

 

With the amount of game time you would lose, I would just stay with the mod.

 

Any large mod that changes gameplay can cause issues if you don't like it, and remove it during a playthrough. Many will recommend to never remove mods during a playthrough as corrupting the save is very common.

If a save requires something from a mod and that mod has been removed it can cause a crash. Try going back several saves, or even back to the beginning, and use bracketing to zero in on when the crash begins.

I tried to to this with the earliest save I have, but the same thing happens: I am able to load the save with the mod de-activated, but can't save without crashing unless I re-activate it. The save isn't very old though, I had 84 copies of the save folder from different periods in the game, but they occupied too much space on disk, so I deleted them all days ago, except the last 4, so could try only with the oldest save in those remaining folders.

 

But I suspect this would have happened anyway, no matter how much older the save would be, since the mod was present in the game almost since the beginning, it's just I never botherd to start it until some days ago, unfortunately....

 

I guess I will have to keep it, but at least I will be more careful with the next mods: before starting one, I will make test saves wiith the new mod, and try to load and save in them with this mod de-activated; if it works, then ok; if not, I would better stay away from such a mod. That's sad though, I never thought that making a clean save could be a problem.

Not certain it will help, but you could try the "coc center and wait trick".

 

Deactivate the problematic mod, but don't uninstall it. Open the console and then type coc center and then hit Enter. You will be transported to an open plain with a few trees visible in the distance. Using the game wait menu (default the t key) wait for three full days and then a bit for good measure (so 72 hours plus a few). Open the console and then coc weye and you will be transported to the fisherman's shack at Weye (if you know the correct location code for another location you can go back there instead).

 

That may be all you need to do to get back on track or if not you can then add the step of uninstalling the problematic mod and then going through the coc center wait again.
