Looks like a nVidia tech demo with maybe some alibi content. Meh, I'm not going to install anything from beth.net anyway, unless there is a way to download it directly and put it into the NMM.

 

You should be able to download from beth.net, then just move the files to the correct places manually.

well of course, but I think that even if it's a bit of a PoS to play :wink: it's probably not a PoS to walk through
one of the best games ever made after all... basically was presented as a glorified tech demo at first
and with those new pieces/techniques/abilities, artisans made it what it is
like, yeah, check this out, it's amazing what goes into making something
notice also that the tech demo is partially made up of the actual level designs, or the levels are partially made up of the tech demo
and I think, I can't remember for sure but I think, the tech demo itself was exciting at the time, because it brought some fairly new concepts to the minds of a lot of people in terms of what gaming can yield (not because the tech demo is fun to play as a sandbox simulator)

Yeah it's the real mod. The comments say it's fake because a lot of people on the internet like to read other people's comments and then start parroting that information. There are also comments on nVidia's own article (which links to that exact mod) which state it's fake.

 

What I find funny is the fact that people are trying to point out the Upload date being the 26th as proof of it being fake... and yet nVidia hadn't announced the mod until yesterday. So if nVidia didn't announce it until yesterday, how did the person who uploaded it on the 26th know what to call it? They're also completely ignoring the fact that you can upload mods privately in order to edit the proper info and to test them on consoles (if applicable), which is likely what nVidia did.

 

So yes. It's the real mod. Enjoy. :)

Ah even more shilling from bethesda and nvidia with fallout 4. They already screwed thousands of AMD users over with the rainbow glitch. I hell as sure aint buying that 1080P card.. Nor playing this boring mod...

The mod even broke the image slider on the website for me.. LOL.

Yeah, I mean there's not really a limit here that I know of. If modern computers could handle it, I don't see why you couldn't have ludicrous textures. Pictures that big, however, are put together from many smaller high res pictures. Although, I don't think those textures would be used in games for individual items, like a rock. I mean, if you look at a rock texture, say it's 600k by 600k, you'll just see a high detail rock. Perhaps you could zoom into it to the point that you can see microscopic pores, but I a developer making an educational game about rocks for example could just as easily simulate zooming in on a rock with different textures, blending together seamlessly. However, it might be useful for mega textures. Basically the idea is that the graphics for everything in a game, or perhaps just the landscape, is one giant texture. That way it's completely unique everywhere, instead of having repeat textures that observant people might notice. I learned a little bit about them while reading a tutorial for Unity, but my understanding is that the Id Tech engines use them in some games, and they're like 30k x 30k.

 

Edit: I just noticed that website is called petapixel. I don't think there are even a such thing as a terapixel picture yet, which would have 1000 times as many pixels as a giga pixel. 1000 terapixels would be a petapixel, or 1,000,000,000,000,000 pixels, or for example a 32,000,000 x 32,000,000 image. Also, I did a quick search, it looks like there's a 10k texture pack for minecraft.

 

Edit 2: I might also mention that textures usually wouldn't be these numbers exactly. They're usually like powers of two. Like 1024 x 1024 (a 1k texture), 2048 by 2048 (2k). So I guess a 10k texture would be 16,384 x 16,384? I'm not savvy enough to know why. Maybe just to keep a standard. I know that in my own games, it causes me difficulty getting the GUI interface to scale with different aspect ratios right if my textures don't follow that example.
