JimboUK
Make a copy of your game folder, do what you want to do with Steam online, then go offline again and replace the updated game folder with your back up.
letrazzrot
Unfortunately the launcher seems to be made to force the update regardless what settings are present in Steam. I blame Bethsoft for this myself. Bad patch. It's a "feature" of Steam by design (and not a clearly documented one, IMO). From here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2125376The option to disable automatic updates does not disable the requirement for Steam to install the latest updates before launching your game. This option will only allow you to delay the update until you next choose to launch the game. There are no options for running Steam games without all necessary updates. Also, it's been said that certain updates, presumably those flagged as important DRM or security updates, may download in the background no matter what the settings. Personally, automatic updates haven't really been an issue for me in the past - except when dealing with mods (which are sometimes broken after an update). I can also sympathize with those who have limited data usage from their ISP. In any case, it seems like a bad design choice by Steam, although their are a couple workarounds (firewall, multiple steam folders).
Wolves425
best way to turn off steam auto update is to uninstall steam, however, that wount do you much good as you need it to play.next best would be to stay in offline mode until you decide to update. CaptainChaos
yeah Steam really screwed me with Fallout New Vegas. The last patch introduced a serious game breaking bug that took me hours to figure out a work around (FPS would drop to 10 after looting a chest - you had to switch weapons to restore FPS - WTF?!) and I even uninstalled the whole game and reinstalled it but it would not run unless it was fully patched and I could not turn off the autopatch anyway. Steam is the absolute worse. It's settings should do what they say, and also you should be able to play a game without an internet connection, especially once you register. DRM is killing the industry. Anyway, thanks for the above tricks with this game at least.
