FlankerDFR
I'm new to TES world; knowing none of it's history. My question is more of a functionality issue. I've twice run into TES V characters who are seemingly invulnerable. Once it was the Leader of one of the Stormcloak camps, and the most recent was Vex and 3 (I think) of her Thieves Guild companions in the in the rats area of Riften. I meleed all of them down repeatedly, only they would not die; but recovered and came back at me. What the bleep??!! Is my inability to kill them because I'm still unaligned with any factions? Some portion of the main quest/s I must complete before I can successfully attack and kill them? TY!
TheSuey
They are essential to the progression of quest lines and can only be killed by using the console to modify their status as such
lordandromeda
For some reason Bethesda wanted to change the rules. It used to be, in Morrowind, you could "accidentally" kill even the most important NPC in the game, Vivec. I guess one too many people cried about it, because now even semi-essential characters are unkillable. Even people you might lust for the death of will all of your heart. I hate Maven Black-Briar, and I hate the piece of human garbage who coded and designed her. She sent DOZENS of assassins after me. She's performed the black sacrament, maybe THRICE in my name. And yet AND SON OF A BITCHING YET NOT ONLY CANT YOU KILL HER, THE GAME FORCES YOU TO WORK *FOR* HER! *foams at the mouth*

Skyrim's NPCs have lives, those lives can be dangerous. I for one don't want to be walking in the wilderness when all of a sudden a message pops up that I failed a quest because some NPC decided it would be awesome to jump into the mouth of a dragon. Though I do wish I could kill some essential NPCs... Maven Black-Briar does need to learn her place though... Maven: "Don't cross me or I'll send the Dark Brotherhood after you..."Dovahkiin: "Bish, I AM the Dark Brotherhood! >:O"

Maven: "Don't cross me or I'll send the Dark Brotherhood after you..."Dovahkiin: "Bish, I AM the Dark Brotherhood! >:O" all I can say is that they were good enough to make the traveling merchants in FA3 survive 95% of the time.you'd think they could have given SOME kind of provision. Maybe a killing blow from a shout being able to do them in. And that doesn't explain how or why they think the legates need to be immortal for a stormcloak dovakiin who's finished the war and won it for Ulfric. It kind of grinds my gears that I was given free reign by Ulfric to go slaughter the legion, and yet here I am, unable to so much as steal ONE legate soul. nobody2005
You notice how your companion will only be killed when hit by you? Just have those essential NPCs all functioning like the companion, they can't get killed by the dragons even if they wander around, they'll just get up again, but then as player, you WILL have the control over whether you want to kill or not. Bethesda got the solution to that all along! As for Maven, I agree that someone needs to do something about that woman. I thought I could unite a few in Riften who wanted to stand up against her, but there wasn't any quests to do so. Not only Bethesda make you work for her (SPOILER COMING) Maven ended up as the Jarl of Riften and there's nothing you can do about it! Don't you just want to do the Black Sacrament and kill the bastard who designed Maven to have absolutely no rival?
FlankerDFR
OK.........................guess I was wasting my time on that last night! LOL! Bingo Bango
Anyone got exact details of how to set NPCs as non-essential/killable with the console? EDIT: Hmm, I've given 'setessential <baseid> 0' a few tries. It seems to work on some essential characters (e.g. Urag the librarian at the mage's guild, Ancano, Savos Aren) but not others (e.g. Delphine, Esbern, Farkas, Eorland Gray-Mane). Anyone know if I'm missing something? Edited December 1, 2011 by Bingo Bango
bpestilence
The real funny thing is that, according to Bethesda, it was never supposed to be this way. Before the game was released they were bragging about the immersive environment, and how quests could be given by any number of people... So if you killed a questgiver another person would inherit the role. Guess they never got around to that part of the programming....
