Resurrection Spell?

Here's a crazy idea.. what about making it a sword instead of a staff? I dunno, just strikes me as this amusing concept; a sword that does zero damage, heals 50 points of damage, and when it strikes a dead body it revives them.

It's wacky, but I prefer the staff idea. I've written up a design spec, for the simple and complex versions of the resurrect mod. I'll post it up soon.

Didn't see it mentioned, but the console command 'resurrect 1' will resurrect an NPC as-is - no reset of inventory.

Thanks. That was the only real problem of the simple version of the Resurrection mod.

The complicated version requires a way of adding quest markers to dead bodies, and preventing the game engine from clearing them. So the player can come back and resurrect them, as soon as they're ready.

Wait, we're still doing the quest-marker dead character thing..?

Not exactly. I see two mods here. One is simple and just involves the Staff of Resurrection. The other involves the quest marker stuff. The easy version can be made pretty soon, while the other one, is going to require more work, and the Creation Kit.

If you're not interested in the quest-marker one, don't worry. The second version is just a fuller, and more complicated version of the first. I will help someone make the Staff of Resurrection mod, but I also want to work on the more complicated one.

EDIT: After discussions in this thread and thinking on the idea myself, I'm come up with this:

Design spec, for a Resurrection Mod

Reason for Mod

Some players want a way to resurrect dead allies, who have been accidentally killed by friendly fire. This includes followers and NPCs required for quests, including side-quests. There are two ways of implementing this ability

Mod 1: The Staff of Resurrection Quest

Brief: A simple mod that provides a staff that can be used by players of any level, as soon as they've completed the quest. Technically, the mod requires nothing more than attaching a resurrect script to a vanilla staff.

This quest will involve the player retrieving six pieces of the Staff of Resurrection. One piece of the staff will be found in each of the six Hall of the Dead found in Skyrim:

1. Hall of the Dead in Falkreath.

2. Hall of the Dead in Markarth.

3. Hall of the Dead in Riften.

4. Hall of the Dead in Solitude.

5. Hall of the Dead in Whiterun.

6. Hall of the Dead in Windhelm.

Once the player has found all six pieces, the staff can be used to resurrect any fallen character.

Options:

1. The staff may only work on named characters, or other NPCs involved in a player quest.

2. The staff may be broken up into fewer pieces, if necessary, such as 3 or 4.

3. The staff is an enchanted item, and therefore needs to be charged up using soul gems.

Mod 2: The Staff of Sovngarde Quest

Brief: Similar to the Staff of Resurrection quest above, but provides a more demanding quest intended for higher-level players. This mod will likely not be possible until the Creation Kit as it involves a custom dungeon. Sovngarde does already exist in the Skyrim game, but I'm not sure whether we can re-use that dungeon, without breaking important quests. Successful completion of this quest grants the player the ability to resurrect dead allies, in a believable way, and without recourse to console commands. It provides the player with the Spell of Resurrection (SPORE) and the means to purchase the Scroll of Resurrection(SCORE). High-level mage characters, with sufficient Magicka, should be able to cast the spell, whilst non-mage characters must purchase an expensive scroll, perhaps 5000 gold or more.

This quest will be in two parts:

Part 1: This involves the player encountering a mage, who possesses one of the three pieces of the staff. He wants the player to find the other two pieces. (The location of these pieces is undecided.) Once the staff is made whole, the mage will discover that the staff is uncharged, and requires filling. The staff can be recharged using the Font of Souls (FOS), located in Sovngarde.

Part 2: The mage will summon a portal to Sovngarde, which the player will enter and fight their way to the FOS. Once the Staff of Sovngarde is fully charged, the player will return it to the mage. The grateful mage will disenchant the staff and will offer to teach SPORE, to the player. The mage will also be a permanent vendor of SCORE, which has the same ability as the spell.

Options:

1. It may be necessary to address game balance issues, since SPORE allows a mage character to resurrect corpses for free, while warriors have to pay gold for SCORE. A simple change would be to make the Magicka cost very high, requiring the player to buy a special potion of Extra Magicka, only available at the same mage who issued the Staff of Sovngarde quest. This change would introduce a gold cost for mage characters, in a fair way.

2. It could be possible to allow players with high Alchemy skills to make the special Potion of Extra Magicka, themselves.

3. If there are problems, using Sovngarde, a different location will need to be used. It's not a big deal.

- Make it a mid-range restoration spell; or make it a novice resto spell that will require a minimum magicka which can probably be obtained with a few magicka fortification items/potions/blessings just long enough to reproduce the spell.

- 10 second channel with both hands to produce magical resurrection orb between hands

- release orb into any ONE dead ally

- 1 day cooldown (make adjustable?)
