Bad Performance on good machine (help)

Dose buddah know his stuff or what? Give the man the kudos he deserves.

I had to learn the hard way (trial and error) with Morrowind so I read everything I could find before I started playing Oblivion.

Here is the link to the site Bben46 mentioned and I think it should be stickered somewhere because I think its one, if not the best resource on the web for getting the most out of your game. Hardware and software. He breaks it down to individual video cards and more. It should probably be required reading, but I know the futility of asking for that. lol. :thanks:

I went back to the tweak guides and re tweaked my system. I have some before and after results.

Location

IC Market Dist daytime before 39 - 42 after 27-33

Red ring road N of Ft Empire before 36 - 40 after 31 -42

Heavy grass area at side of road before 25 - 30 after 27 - 29

After looking at these numbers, I can't see that my tweaking made much difference. If anything it actually reduced my FPS. However, I remembered that I am currently running a beta version of the Streamline mod. (V3.1) I should have deactivated it for this test, but I forgot. Too late now.

Among other things, Streamline will adjust certain features to attempt to keep your FPS within a range you set. It will cut down on visual stuff such as the distance you see things to raise your FPS and then when your machine catches up, put back the stuff it reduced.

I think my setting is to try to keep FPS between 25 and 40 so it was likely making those adjustments when I was running these tests.

Also, I did not shut down my second monitor or any of my other programs during the second test. I expected the readings to be somewhat higher even with everything turned on.

I've been through all the tweak guides, and like bben46, I found that it actually decreased my framerates... quite a bit, actually.

Know what guys, I can deal with the way Oblivion is running, I'll just have to mug it out once 3 or more NPCs are on screen.

thankyou for all the help you've provided and time you've taken to try and solve my issues.

Oblivion is one of those few games you'll still play, even if it doesn't run all that well.. it's just that good :)
