Copied saved files after reformatting, games won't load

Hello. I saved off all my save files before formatting and then I copied them back into the saves folder. When I go to load a game it shows up as "42949 Unknown Location" and if I try and load it it just stalls out (the screen is just black with the symbol of the empire there like it's loading). It never loads and I just have to alt+f4 out.

Has anyone ever copied over save files and got it to work?

For some strange reason the .ini files that Skyrim creates are connected with the save files. I had trouble with this also at first but here is how I fixed it.

Delete the folder skyrim creates that contains the Save folder and the .ini files. My was located in C:\Users\*User*\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim

Start the game normally and start a new game. After it has started up you can exit the game.

Now copy your save files over to the new save folder Skyrim has created.

Hurray, that worked!

Thanks.

I followed this advice and still not having any luck. I have 300+ hours in Skyrim on my character and I can't seem to get it loaded. I recently went from an XP operating system to Windows 7 and I backed up my save files. When I put them back on, I get this 42949 message and unknown location. I've tried everything I can think of and still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas?

ok i had this bug and i solved it alone because it was the most obvious and simple problem and i was too in panic of losing all my progress to notice. sometimes the solution is right in your face so, maybe this will help someone

the "my games" folder is saved on my documents folder and this one is connected to the one drive cloud. the cooler of my pc is constantly being loud and my boyfriend closed all background programs to minimize the noise and i didnt know. i was trying to backup my save file to google drive and do as instructed in this thread but it was "unreadable" and i started to panic. i couldnt even copy the files to another folder and i thought it was doomed.

no. i was simply logged off my one drive and as soon as i reopen the application the game could load my files. well i guess im happy it wasnt a big problem but i spent the last 30 minutes on the verge of tears thinking of losing 350 hours of progress to the void and now i feel a tad stupid.
