genolune
So the thought occurred to me, would other modders like to do mentorships with us new modders? Like for example when our schedule lines up we could use some chat software to share screens and the like to help watch another mod author and ask questions. I'm still going to read/watch the tutorials that I have bookmarked but I think it would be a neat experience.
damanding
My experience has been that as long as I demonstrate I'm making sincere effort to learn on my own that more experienced modders are willing to answer what I call intelligent questions when I post a thread with one. Those being questions that demonstrate I've done my homework so I'm not just asking them to do my work for me. Do that long enough to develop a reputation and you'll find one or two experienced modders who will be willing to take you under their wing in private message as long as you don't abuse it. We have to remember that the more experienced modders also have lives, their own projects and may not have lots of time for mentoring. More formal mentoring in the style of apprenticeships would be awesome but that might be difficult to find.
genolune
That's understandable. I just wasn't sure if screen sharing and the like are a thing, maybe one of my roommates knows something about that since I tend to be real quiet and don't ever Skype or anything like that. Biggest thing would be more of an interactive type environment for one or two questions. Sort of like how it is easier to have a real person help guide you through a problem in say the Creation Kit or any of the graphics utilities. Thank you for your input! damanding
I'm still pretty new to modding myself and I lurk on the forums even more than I post so I'm just sharing what I've observed. A lot of the threads that are "tell me how to do xyz" tend to get ignored, especially if it's something that tutorials already exist for. But if you instead say "hey I watched x tutorial and I'm stuck on step 5, I've tried a, b, c, and get y result instead of x result and I don't understand what I've done wrong" you're probably more likely to get an answer. dimedius
I've seen the same. If you appear to already done a lot of the "easier" stuff covered by tutorials, there seems to be a better reception. I've reached out to some people to find out about how leveled list scripts work and received a few replies pointed me in a good direction. I did reach out to a few authors who did not reply but about a month after I figured it out, I saw some of these authors had created tutorials that randomly showed up (so I could see why they did not reply to me as it was already answered - somehow missed the tutorials they did create). genolune
I've noticed that people have been really helpful. The big thing will be securing permissions and crediting authors for meshes/textures, but after I looked at the Creation Kit it reminds me of the Unity engine and with the tutorials and stuff I've been reading I shouldn't be too bad off. I've got more stuff to chew on and absorb to keep me occupied and hopefully a contributing member of the community.
