Or perhaps, is Shadowmere actually genderless, being an obviously more than mortal equine? Astrid refers to Shadowmere as male, even though in Oblivion Lucien Lachance explicitly refers to her as a mare (AKA, female). Regardless of whatever configuration (s)he has reproduction wise. So, this leaves xis gender more up to personal preference.
