Improved dual-wielding melee combat

So, I love dual-wielding and just going nuts with my berserker rage. Although there are two main things I do dislike about dual-wielding.

You'll be completely defenseless to incoming attacks, because you can't block or parry. It should be possible, to the same extent as you can block with 2-handed weapons (Take less damage, and have the ability to try and bash people to stop spells and power-attacks)

The animation when standing -still- with two one-handed weapons looks pretty cool, but if you just adjust your view slightly to the side, your eyes flap down into another position, and if you have to adjust it a little more than that, and do it slowly your arms will be flapping up and down as if you're trying to take off from the ground - it looks kinda silly, and I'm not sure how or what to do about it, but something definately should be done.

The latter has been done; look up "dual wielding animation fix" or something along those lines.

The former would be a bit harder to do. Shields can be blocked with because the game knows to block with the shield; swords would need extra coding for dual-wield blocking to work, and unless you implemented an extra button command you'd be stuck with either an extra key to hit (which leaves controller users like myself out in the cold unless we give up a button). You could swap left-hand power-attacking with blocking (have it so that the character assumes a blocking "pose" with the left hand weapon if you try to power-attack left handed), which makes the left hand a true "off-hand weapon" in that it would be used for blocking or dual-wielded power-attacks, but makes it (again) so that you can't use a left-hand power attack.

I think a way that it could be done is tie in all attacks with weapons to the right hand. This way when you attack with the right click you use both weapons, lose the individual hand attacks. Then if you click the left button you block. Personally I think a Parry perk tree needs to be added, less damage reduction than block, but you get neat perks like Riposite or disarm.

it would be great if the normal twin weapon attack (pushing left and right mouse at the same time) would parry attacks, but only if you timed it right. (if they hit you as your character crosses their weapons for the attack it would block)

that way, you wouldn't be completely defenseless, but it would require a level of skill to deflect attacks.

I like that idea! It would also make up for the fact that you're rooted in place when you do it. If you parried with it you would follow through with the swing, but do no damage (and cause the enemy to stumble, like if you hit them with a FUS right before they attacked). I don't recall if the dual-wield daggers standard double-attack (wow, that's a mouthful) is the same animation, though-- I know the double-handed power attack isn't, but I don't recall ever using them for long.

Well there is an animation for blocking without a shield, wielding a single one-handed weapon, I'm not sure but I think it would look quite alright even if the second hand held a second weapon.

As for which button to use, I suppose it would be good to let people assign the key themselves through the control menu, some people have additional mouse buttons or others may prefer using... Q? Some button near your normal WASD keys. *shrug*

I don't really like the idea of making all attacks go to the left mouse button and all blocks to the right mouse button, it reduces the liberty of your attacks and jabs, and could cause problems with the power attacks (would reduce them from 3 different to 1 single)

The 'general idea' of fighting with 2 weapons is being light on your feet, trying to stay out of the way when people swing slow weapons, the blocking would be best used against people fighting with one-handed weapons, and just like when blocking with a 2-handed weapon, the blocking only reduces the taken damage a slight bit, but atleast makes you do something rather than standing there and taking it all in.

The only way for a dual-wielding melee character to stop a spell cast or power attack is to counter with a quicker power attack and hope it'll stagger the oponent, a bash attack would really make the fights more fun, and without really unbalancing things. The damage output of a character using a 2-handed melee weapon is about the same as a person using 2 1-handed weapons as far as I've noticed so far (If not even higher with 2-handed weapons), so allowing the same level of blocking + 'shield' bashing whilst dual-wielding would just balance the game if anything.

Or forget the whole blocking thing, and make it so that when your weapon's vertices touch, a parry happens and the person who has the strongest weapon(s), stumbles.

...I likes mine more XD
