I really don't know why the congrats dialog wasn't launched properly after killing the 10th friend, the "setstage DA08 80" command is triggered by the game together with this dialog.. maybe some script lag?.. who knows ;))

Well, she did congratulate me, but it was only a generic line, rather than the quest finish line. IIRC, she is supposed to say the following in order:

1. "Excellent work, child."

2. "I can feel their heartbreak swelling in my blade."

3. "Their tears shine the ebony to a sharpest gleam."

4. "Ah, the blood of deceit is a nourishing flow."

5. "At last, my blade is returned to its full glory. Now go forth, child. Continue your tiny subversions against the orders of trust and intimacy."

However, after the 4th line, she went back to the first, rather than go onto the fifth. Again, I'm not sure what is causing it, but I am considering downloading this http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/15679 for future playthroughs, which reduces the number of required kills from 10 to 5 but, more importantly, would overwrite the previous script and, hopefully, whatever problem was causing the initial glitch to begin with. The only thing stopping me, my only question about that mod is whether or not it reverts the fix that makes the Ebony Blade a proper 2-handed sword, rather than the original vanilla which was a 2-handed weapon with 1-handed perks.

I do not recommend the mod you linked... the only thing it does is that it adds two points for one kill instead of just one... + the original script triggers the mephala dialogue for every other kill and this mod removes this condition, which means that the quest ends after killing 5th friend, but the corresponding perk needs 10 kills to fully restore the power of the sword and that is not resolved by the mod...

 

... your bug is most likely caused by some conflicting mod - so changing two lines in one script with this mod won't help anyway ;))

Oh, so it just ends the quest at the fifth kill but does not actually give the same power of 10 kills? Yes, "conflicting mod" was my first assumption. However, of the mods that I'm using, which one would it be?

... Also, I just thought of another cause, but it is so ridiculous that when I thought of it originally, I quickly dismissed it. Anyway, one time when Mephala was doing her... kill narration, I went to a different cell while she was in mid-narration. Would that have caused one of the kills not to "count"? During my next playthrough, should I make sure to stand well still while Mephala is speaking?

... yesterday I most likely did the "math" from the modded script maybe too fast... now I'm looking at it again and the mod should work as intended, without breaking anything.... but I still don't believe that installing this mod could be in any way helpful in your case.. :wink:

I think that "leaving the cell" during the dialog with Mephala could very well be the problem... the dialog is done through "scene" and those are a bit glitchy compared to the normal dialog system... well and if not, the only type of conflict that I can think of is something changing how the factions or NPC relations works...

Between this and the fact that apparently talking to Alvor or Gerdur too much makes Heimskr no longer preach, Skyrim, or rather all of Tamriel, should be called the Land of Eggshells. Little things cause big problems. Also, I'll download that Less Killing for Mephala mod so long as it does not make things worse, like the possible glitch that you described or if it reverts the 2-handed sword fix.

I've downloaded a mod which animates unsheathing axes and swords from your back (as a thief I don't want large metal things hanging off my side, hitting the floor etc). But they are shown as sheathed normally, on the side. Are there any mods around which actually put the weapons on your back, like your bow and arrows? Also got a 'dagger from ankle animation, haven't tried that yet but imagine the same issue, so same question lol..any mods to actually carry daggers in your boot?

the mod is just a one script, so the sword stays same and nothing else is changed ;) ... I have to agree with "little things cause big problems" - maybe a year ago I've tried to re-enable some game content blocked by Bethesda, which you still can find in Creation Kit... it was a simple random event - recently dead NPCs were haunting their relatives as ghosts... but with this enabled the game went completely nuts, maybe the worst thing I've ever done to my installation of Skyrim... btw. the quest "Whispering Door" was originally 3 times longer as well... they were pretty much aware of these bugs so they rather cut everything out...
