soul gems

This has been bugging the hell out of me. I'm on my third play through and I can't quite figure out the soul gems. Right now I have bound swords and the perk that allows me to absorb souls. Currently, my highest soul gem that is empty is a common. I have lesser and petty in my inventory that are empty. When I kill a bandit it says I don't have a soul gem large enough. Yet if I kill a werewolf, it says soul captured!!! So how big of a soul gem do I need for humanoids??? How is a werewolf soul smaller than humans/elves etc.?

Is there a chart out for what can be absorbed in to each soul?

F***ing magnets, how do they work?

Hahahaha :P

Anyway, here's my breakdown of Soul Gems:

There are two types of soul gems. Ones that can capture the souls of creatures (spiders, trolls, wolves, etc.) but not the souls of people/NPCs, and ones that can also catch the souls of NPCs. So, when you killed a bandit, you didn't have the appropriate soul gem (black) and when you killed a werewolf, it's just a creature.

Each soul of a creature has a certain "strength, which can fit into a soul gem large enough to contain it. The first type of soul gem has 6 levels, listed in order of quality or soul capacity: Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, and Grand. You can find these on merchants or in dungeons at times already filled, but to fill them you need to Soul Trap a creature and kill it in the allotted time.

So, let's say a wolf has a petty soul, and you have a Common Soul Gem (which is actually two levels above petty) and you cast soul trap or use a weapon with said enchantment. You kill the wolf, and its soul is trapped in the Common Soul Gem. Unfortunately, the potential of the soul gem was wasted, but you can still use the petty soul in the gem to replenish some of a enchanted weapon's depleted charge. Upon using the Common Soul Gem (Petty soul), the gem is destroyed.

The same goes for Black Soul Gems. Their max capacity is Grand still, but they can also capture an NPC's soul, as mentioned above. Unfortunately, though they are more rare, they are also destroyed after its charge is used.

There are, however, two special artifacts that act as permanent soul gems as well, and never are destroyed upon usage: Azura's Star (Grand Soul Gem-quality) and The Black Star (Black Soul Gem-quality).
