When in 1280x1024 Res., Menu [Tab] Flashes; Help?

When I'm running 1280x1024 screen resolution on Oblivion the menu [tab] flashes about every two seconds. The menu disappears and reappears in about 20 milliseconds. ... About, I'm just estimating.

I'll run on 1024x768 resolution for the time being, because it doesn't flash at that resolution; but if I find a solution to this problem, I'll bring it back up to 1280x1024. I prefer 1280x1024 because my desktop resolution (for both monitors) is 1280x1024 and if I have one monitor's res 1024x768 and another's 1280x1024, there's a lot of collision and it's annoying ^-^... Also, the images are sharper on 1280x1024 than they are on 1024x768...

Please help me out, here = P.

It also flashes on 800x600 as I just found out.

Need more info:

What Operating system? what video card? What else is running? What mods are you using? Which version of Oblivion? Are you running KOTN or SI? Have you patched to the latest version? Have you installed the latest updates for your video card?

When you toggle the tab does that lock the menu or does it still flash?

Do you have any keyboard programs that might redefine how a key works?

The more information we have on your system and game, the more help we can give.

I do see you are using dual monitors. Are they identical? or are they 2 difrent types (1 LCD & 1 CRT?) or different sizes of the same type such as 2 LCD or 2 CRT but one larger or made by a different manufacturer?

and are you playing on just one or is your game spread onto both?

I use identical I-INC 19 inch wide screen LCD dual monitors running at 1400x900 off of a XFX Nvidia 7600GT board for most things, but only one when playing Oblivion. If you are using both I would like to know how that is working out.

I also use a dual monitor program called Multimon that has not affected anything in the game. Are you using any programs to enhance multimonitor use?

OS: Dell Dimension C521; Vista

Graphics card: Radeon X1300 graphics card; 4 Gb of RAM, 312 Gb of HD space.

Other programs running: None

What mods am I using: None at the moment

Version 1.2.0416

KOTN? SI?

I tried, it said it couldn't work because file was changed?

There ARE updates for my graphics card?

When I press tab, I can access the menu as if I were normally, just it flashes.

I don't believe so.

Both monitors are the same size. But one is a flat panel (Dell 1707FP) and the other is a flat screen CRT (Compaq 7600).

I'm playing on just one monitor.

No I am not using a monitor enhancing program or whatever = P.

Hope that's enough info.

Are you playing on your flat panel (Dell 1707FP)?

Are you sure it's Oblivion flashing the screen & not your monitor flashing it’s OSD?

I ask because I had a monitor do that every time the resolution changed, very annoying.

Yes I am playing on my flat panel. No, the tab menu is flashing, not the screen.

As I still use XP, I won't be much help if it is a Vista problem.

As to the graphics card, Radeon uses the ATI chipset, look for an ATI upgrade. As Mine is Nvida, again not much help

You are using the latest upgrade for Oblivion

KOTN = Knights of the Nine expansion

SI = Shivering Isles expansion

I was hopeing that your dual monitor setup was at least similar to mine so we could compare notes, but it is totally different. No help there.

You might try switching to playing on the CRT just to see if that makes any difference. also, MOST CRTs have a faster update time than MANY LCDs and it might look even better.

Many stock computers such as DELLs come with a bunch of preloaded useless programs. They will load on boot and stay in background stealing system resources. One of those could be a keyboard modifying program that uses the tab for something. Try looking on Geek websites for information on how to find out what is being loaded and how to get rid of it if you don't use it. Again, as I don't use Vista can't give much direction here. For XP there is a program called 'PC Decrapifier' maybe there is something similar for Vista. Google it and see.

Also, Google your video card, maybe there is a site out there with some advice on it.

For the graphics drivers, you should get the latest version of ATI's Catalyst Control Centre, go here to download the correct one. I believe stock DELL PCs come with an outdated version of the base drivers, which lacks most of the useful features of the full CCC version of the drivers, which may be part of the problem- I believe CCC helps a lot with managing dual monitors, especially with games.

As for the useless crap... I got a DELL Dimension PC, it had loads of stuff... any items on your Desktop for things like AOL Broadband free trial should go (they're only shortcuts, not programs, luckily, though the AOL browser may have come installed on my PC too I forget- if so, uninstall it.) Also get rid of Dell media experience, and powerDVD, unless you use your PC to watch DVDs frequently. Apart from that, anything already installed which you don't use can probably go safely.
