happened to me too. Pre 1.3 playing on Ultra, had JUST gotten a new gfx card the day before the patch. Played all night on ultra, looked sweet. Patch day, launcher says use high, wtf? So I set it to ultra and 10 fps everywhere I go. I was so mad, I JUST GOT THIS NEW CARD!!! Have since figured out that I can turn off AA and filtering in the game options and force them through my card and I get ultra textures and 50 fps. Only thing is the view distances are still down at high setting, turning those up kills my game now.

I am noticing that many of the posts in this thread mention "dual core". Not sure if that is the issue, but I can tell you that I have experienced all these issues and I do not have dual core. Initially with 1.1 I had frequent crashes and a horrible FPS in battles, problems in some buildings, and snowy weather in the mountains, etc., and this was on medium settings. At this point I decided to pay attention to my system, and as it turned out, drivers that I thought were the most recent were not which I immediately took care of. After getting my system up to date, the problems that made the game unplayable at times were gone, but my FPS was still too low on Ultra, but tolerable on high. I killed any background tasks not needed, and all those things you do to get some more speed, but I was still not happy with the FPS. It should be noted that during all this time I watched my CPU and GPU temps constantly to see how each change affected my system in-game. After I had all the tweaks done on the system end I could do, and by the way nothing is OC, I had normal for me load temps on the CPU and GPU, and a completely stable system, but the FPS on high was still tolerable but lower than I would have liked, but perfectly playable. I guess the point I am making is that I did everything I could to optimize my end early on. If I had not had problems playing early on, it still did not mean I had an optimal system set-up, which might have bit me in the butt a patch or two later.

At this point I added mods, and the 4GB. Launching with the 4GB brought me back up on FPS and I could run whatever settings I wanted. As the patches have come along I have not had any issues. Is this because I avoided them by addressing my system early on? I don't know, but I have no doubt that some of the issues folks will experience with updates will not be the patch but will be on the user end. I have seen this with both RPG and FPS games, and through the years have had to adjust on my end for changes on the software end. There is no way programmers can take into account every conceivable combination of hardware out there, and also every mis-match of hardware. One important thing we can do goes beyond watching the FPS, that by itself really doesn’t tell us much. By monitoring the temps along with the FPS, now we can see how our systems are handling the load, and if we see a corresponding rise in temps as the FPS drops, or the system starts to crash, it’s time to make sure everything on the hardware side is doing what it should, especially the fans and coolers. There is also the issue of data being bottle-necked. You can have the biggest baddest GPU out there, but if it is held back by your MB/CPU combination it will cause you headaches and also the same symptoms on many games. However, I have seen inadequate cooling cause more problems than anything else on multiple games as they become more demanding.

For reference, I am not running in windowed mode, I monitor my temps etc. on a second monitor. I am running both 21” monitors at their native resolution.

My system:

Windows 7(64-bit), Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 MB, Core I7 860 CPU, 8 Gigs of DDR3 1600Mhz Memory with heat sinks, and (2) GTS 250 1G in SLI (Note these cards are below the recommended specs for the game.) In addition my system is water cooled. I have fans out the wazoo because I have learned from experience that temps can be your worst enemy.

Sorry for writing an essay, but I encourage everyone who is having problems to make sure they are not generating enough heat to bake a turkey in their case:), and update drivers. Eliminate system, then blame patch.

FYI, I have over eight hours on the 1.3 and all is good, and that is with me finally deciding to take on Skuldafn Temple to give it a good test. Good luck to everyone having problems…..hang in there!

When you patch the game it will overwrite any skyrimprefs.ini tweaks you may have made if you run the default launcher again. This could potentially lead to FPS changes. When I updated to 1.3 I recopied my ini files and things are looking and running VERY well. No FPS loss here.
