The dog runs away from you and back to the guy who sold him to you, the dog won't follow you anymore and the guy expects you to buy him again. Wait for the mods to come out. I let him out of my sight for a minute and he wandered off. 3 days later the game told me that my follower has left my service. Couldn't find the dog anymore.Another alternative is to go to Riverwood(?), activate the "Daedra's Best Friend" quest and keep the dog you find. He's 100% more entertaining.
