Help With My Mage

Hi all

I'm struggling to find any source of how to level my mage. I nearly levelled up heavy armour till I found that robes would be better, now I continually find myself near death.

1. Armour or robes, which would be better?

2. I wanted to level destruction, then used a summon of some sort and found it did so much more damage than me, please tell me destruction spells get better.

3. I was told to focus on 1 type of spell (shock, fire or ice), why is it best to focus on 1 and not level them all?

4. Which spell potentially does the most damage when maxed, I was told it was fire but shock kicks its ass at the minute.

5. Can someone please explain how the levelling system works?

6. Which attributes do I focus on? I'm now level 6

and have so far just done magica every level.

Thanks

I've made a mage with a dab of thief as i sneak and use bow from afar. As a mage you will of course use robes, otherwise would be blashpemy, though many would argue that heavy armour for mages is far better than robes (in one sense they are, since magicka regeneration is gimped). What race are you playing? Breton? Altmer?

Level 4-12 are pain for the mage. It will get better when you get perks like impact and spells like fireball and ice storm. To make it viable you should consider using the sneak skill and a bow in combination so you'll get 3x sneak damage. Here's some tips:

- Conjuration is a must. Many people don't fancy a pet class (moi) but then you can focus on raising the creatures you have slain instead, gives it some variation. It is vital that you have something that can soak up the damage, a companion will fit the same role.

- with robes you are quick and agile. Use your speed to gain distance. Never be ashamed/afraid of fleeing from combat.

- Use runes in combination with silent casting to set up traps in advance.

- Alchemy is a must.

Try to get 130 hp fairly quick and then dumb the next 10 levels in magicka. My lvl 21 mage has 130 hp and the rest in magicka. Go for a 80/20% or 85%/15%. Just enough so that you wont get one shotted by bosses.

Also: There's a consensus among players that the mage class is very weak and therefore hard to play. Everyone struggles as a mage. It's considered a broken class in many aspects compared to the warrior and the thief. Many exploit the crafting skills to their advantage but you should really avoid this. Take up alchemy and a bit of enchantment. This will suffice.

i played a mage, this is what i learnt

1, stick with heavy armor, i dont care what they say, iron armor has the best defense early game untill you have ebony skin ward, even then its not that efficient and you have to recast it every 2 min or so

2, learn conjuration (summon stuff), it is especially good early game, as they can be your meat shield. late game you can sommon dreamora lord

3, ice, fire, shock are all destruction spell, cast either spell and you level the whole destruction skill. as to what perk you go for, get Impact asap, you can consider it stuns your enermy for 2 sec while you fry their hair off

4, which element is best? Ice is your choice, slows enermy and damage stamina is better than damage magicka or set on fire. After all you are a mage, keep distance is your top priority

how does the level system work? after you casted enough fire balls, you will get a level in Destruction, that is a skill rank. after you get 4 skill ranks you become level 2, of cause it gets harder later on, you need about 8 skill ranks to get to level 10, 20 skill ranks to get level 20 etc

Hi all

1. Personally I use robes, but have light armor gloves and boots, sometimes helmet as well.

2. Which spells are you using? I pretty much stuck with flame, then frost to take down the flame resisting creatures. My most used spell though is Fireball, it has a blast radius so that means AOE(area of effect) damage, and with the perks for fire it does 60 damage, but I dual cast them which just says "it gives a stronger effect."

3. I focused on 2, just using one can be bad at times. Say you chose fire, well what happens when you fight a flame atronach? Same with lightning and frost. Thats why I think its best to use 2, working on all 3 I think the perk points could be used elsewhere. Like I said, I stuck to fire and frost, fire does more damage and frost hurts the stamina of those you fight. Shock I just never liked it though it does magicka damage, but when your a mage you typically have some sort of resistance to other magic so using stamina damage with frost helps with those melee fights.

4. Fireball is what I use it gets the job done and in a hurry. Have not explored for a more powerful spell. On normal gameplay difficulty guards are pushovers as well as anything else, your hardest fights will be dragons that use fire, frost dragons are also pushovers. Giants and mammoths would be your 2nd hardest opponents.

5. From what I notice you basically level a skill by using it. When that skill levels you get exp toward your characters level. Skills being destruction, conjuration, alchemy, one handed, two handed, etc...

6. This really depends, at first I focused on magicka, as I found my fireball tome early and it uses a good deal of magicka. Also I play a high elf as my magic caster, they get an extra 50 magicka.

Notes about my character:

I use the ring mod so I do have more then one ring, though I keep it realistic in the amount I wear. For my gear other then jewlery, I use Arch-Mage robes with Morokei mask, my gloves and boots use to be Elven armor, now I use what I got from the Dark Brotherhood. With the extra rings yes it makes it easier, but the rings do not affect my damage output. I also use the Blessing of Arkay which adds 25 health. Currently using the Mage stone but I would like to use the Atronach stone or the Lord stone. I am currently level 23 and I played 100% legit no ring mod from 1-18, not many problems at all. I did have a few close calls while doing quest to obtain the robes and mask but after that nothing comes close. I just recommend keeping potions till you know your going to be ok, I hardly ever use them now. Though I sometimes will fight with restoration in one hand and destruction or sword in the other, battle mage ftw?

I played as a strict destruction magic mage for the first 30 or so levels of my character. I specialized in lighting magic with all the relevant perks and used gear that lowered the cost of my spells vice magic regen or increased mana. I also wear nothing but cloth. Playing on the default difficulty I have had little to no trouble with anything in the game. With the perk that stuns people upon dual casting there is no reason a mage should ever lose that fight as you can continually cast the spell over and over keeping him stunned. When a group comes at my I switch to chain lighting and do the same. It arcs and hits them all. Also, since my spells are virtually free I never carry magic potions and only carry a couple healing potions, so I'd say alchemy is optional.
