Crash to Desktop at the Dragon Logo

Hi all,

So there are a lot of Skyrim crashes going on at the moment and a lot of suggested fixes. None of the fixes seem to work for me, and there seems to be quite a lot of people out there who are in the same boat as me. Every thread suggests the same things so I wondered whether there are any clever folk out there who can suggest something else to try... The usual suggestions (at time of writing) have not worked. I have done all these things:

1. Changed the audio settings to 16 bit 44100 Hz (CD quality) and every other setting available

2. Made sure that the motherboard sound device is disabled in the BIOS because I have a sound card (I also tried with it re-enabled)

3. Made sure that the audio drivers are up to date

4. Made sure that the video drivers are up to date

5. Started the game in compatibility mode for Vista SP2 and every other available setting

6. Started the game in windowed mode

7. Verified the integrity of the game cache

8. Made sure that patch 1.3 is installed

BUT... the game still crashes to desktop without even an error message when I get to the dragon logo, just at the point where I would expect to see 'Continue, Load, New Game' etc. (see attached video of it happening). If anyone out there has any ideas about anything I can do in the way of diagnostics or fixing this I would be very grateful. At this point I will try virtually anything...

The crash started suddenly - the game used to be fine but about 3 days ago it all went wrong. I am using Windows 7 64bit on a PC that the game suggests can use high video quality.

Thanks in advance for any help! I used to play Skyrim but then it got hit in the knee with an arrow...

Thanks for your help, Maboru. Unfortunately this did not work either >< Something must have changed in the intervening time between my late evening play 4 days ago and the morning attempt 3 days ago that is not liked by something else... Who knows? I may try reinstalling skyrim - can I keep my character and progress if I do that? Will copying the save game files work?

Yes, just copy your save folder to some place safe and copy it back once your new install is initialized. As long as you don't make any major changes to your ini's you should be good to go. You could try one more thing first though; log in to your Steam account without starting the game and try to verify your cache again. For some reason that occasionally works once Steam realizes you're serious about it!

One more thing; check to see if TESV.exe is actually still in your 'skyrim' folder, some people have had corrupted auto-updates if the game was running at the same time as the patch downloading.

The .exe is where it should be. I verified the files twice in a row with no change.

It kinda gets me that there is no error message with some indication about what might have gone wrong for all these people who are having problems - I used to feel like a sympathetic but nonparticipating spectator when I read about all these crashes and bugs - everything was fine for me so I just kept on playing then suddenly one morning out of nowhere the game stops working and Bethesda's own brand of infection has arrived at this house. I have painted a red cross on the door and hope for salvation but nothing comes from them to help and I have to join the massed ranks of clamoring masses that just want to PLAY and don't know why they can't. I'll try the re-install then :-(

Thanks for all your help - it is a pity that Bethesda's poor error handling means that helpful people like yourself are reduced to groping in the dark for arbitrary and myriad solutions to unknowable problems.
