skyrim crashes

Just to throw this out there for people who are having crashes similar to this guy, but you know it is not your hardware, and you have mods.

I have discovered that, apparently, Skyrim does not appreciate texture mods. If you have a good amount of texture mods, especially if they are big texture mods like I have (Whiterun, Skyrims landscape, etc,) the game will crash. Often. The way to check to see if this is the problem (if you did not already know) is to go into your Skyrim directory, go to data, and put the textures folder somewhere safe, such as a temporary holding folder, etc.

I know it's a bit of a bummer, but I hoped this helped some people.

Not for everyone, I have over 30 hi-rez texture mods (about 2.5 gig's worth) and have experienced no problems from that. I'm finding that driver errors and or corruption coupled with PSU problems are the primary reason that so many people in the various 'similar rig' categories are experiencing problems that their compadres are not. Unless a person has extensive computer hardware knowledge and experience coupled with the right test equipment and ability to test hardware then they cannot "know" that their problem in not hardware related.

There are of course many software related problems as well; faulty game installations, faulty mod installations, conflicting background programs, too many background services and processes running and of course mod conflicts (though not as many of the latter as there will be once the CK is released!) Not to mention all the ini editing that's been going on.

Beth games are brutal on computer hardware do to the Devs trying to squeeze every last drop out of the aging game engine while at the same time trying to account for so many different PC platforms that the game must run on so all avenues of rectification need to be addressed.

I do not think I can do a clean sweep of my driver because the driver sweeper doesn't show the driver I have. Which is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730. The only display drivers it shows is AMD display and NVIDIA display. And I do not even have NVIDIA display driver. So now what am I suppose to do?

I don't understand how nVidia could show up.

Just to be clear this is from your DXDiag -

This is the driver set you want to update to - http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

I'm not sure what's going on from what you're describing but just let the sweeper remove your old driver set and then follow the directions to install the new one. (And don't allow Windows to auto install a generic one. When that window pops up just click "No" and browse to the folder where you downloaded the new one, click on it and then click "OK".

I know it sounds very confusing but it's actually a fairly simple process but it could help you to read through this first - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/windows-xp-radeon-display-drivers/107447-uninstalling-installing-ati-drivers-properly.html - or the official guide here - http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/737-20870HowtoInstallYourATIProduct.aspx

Good luck.

I am so scared to uninstall my old driver and install the new driver. :ohdear: Because I am afraid uninstalling my old driver might mess up my computer. Also you said people had a lot of problems with driver sweeper. And also the new driver my have Unwanted experience with laptops. Is there a easier way or safer way to do this?

I can understand how this process can seem intimidating to someone who has never done it before but rest assured thousands of people do this every day and it's never a problem when done correctly and never a fatal problem even when done incorrectly. Here's a quote from the driver release notes -

"The Installation Verification Software will prevent driver download on certain notebook products. This is to protect against the installing of drivers that may disable features or functionality provided by the system manufacturer. If unwanted experiences occur while using Catalyst™ Mobility, it is recommended to revert back to the driver provided by your system vendor for your specific platform. Please contact your system vendor for the most recent drivers for your notebook. "

So you see that even in the unlikely event that the new driver suite might disable some functionality with you're laptop's current driver suite then the new one simply won't install and then you just reinstall your old one instead. Here is the Dell driver site - http://support.alienware.com/Support_Pages/Restricted_Pages/driver_downloads_processed.aspx?os=W764&cat=&manu=&item= - in case you need the old driver (I'm unable to check the differences myself because I get an error while looking up their latest driver, probably because my I'm not accessing the page with an Alienware computer.) It also lists all the drivers that are applicable to your computer.

Here is Dell's help page to assist you - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/help?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavml

After you install the new driver make sure you go back to Steam for the latest official 4gb patch (1.3.7.10) and remove all traces of the old 4gb mod.

I think this is my old driver that I found on the Dell website.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=KFGGW&FileId=2731097651

Also I do not think I ever installed any 4gig mod.And if so why would I have to remove all traces of the old 4gb mod?

If the link does not work I manualy post it.

HI guys! I was having crashing problems on my desktop (specs below) running on Ultra settings, but after playing the game on lowest settings on my laptop at a friend's house for quite awhile crash-free, I decided to try lowering the settings on my desktop and I haven't had a crash since. I play at the same resolution, 1920x1080, but on the low setting. I would recommend giving this a try since it worked for me. I also have a few mods and I thought that they were causing the problems, but for some reason the game runs 100% at low settings for me.

Desktop Specs

CPU: Core i5 2400 3.1 GHz (quad core)

GPU: AMD Radeon HD6950 2Gb

RAM: 4Gb DDR3

OS: Windows 7 64 bit

Laptop Specs

CPU: Core i5 2410M 2.3 GHz (Dual core)

GPU: Intel hd graphics (integrated)

RAM: 6Gb

OS: Windows 7 64 bit
