Make a mod for an existing mod?

So I decided to make a little mod for the Frost mod. Nothing special, just a different start. I was thinking about even uploading it, depending on how it comes out and if the author of Frost would want me to release it...but no matter what I do, I can't get my changes to load in the game.

I've tried everything that my (limited) knowledge on modding allows...but the changes don't show up in-game. Well, the did when I accidentally edited the original Frost mod file, but that wouldn't be something I could upload.

Is what I'm wanting to do possible, or am I better off just modding the original file for my own personal use?

Thanks for any help!

It's possible but it's going to take a little work,

  1. Open the mod you want to mod in FO4edit
  2. got to File Header and change it's Record flag to .esm (also change the file extension to .esm)
  3. Exit FO4edit and save. (Original mod is now an .esm and can be used as a master in the Ckit)
  4. Make your mod in the CK, (Note it will Now require the original mod.esm as a master)

Once finished making your mod for a mod,

  1. Open your mod in FO4edit, (You'll see it also loads Original mod.esm)
  2. got to File Header, master files
  3. change Original Mod.esm back to Original Mod.esp
  4. Exit and save your changes

Next

  1. Open original mod.esm in FO4edit
  2. got to File Header and change it's Record flag to .esp
  3. Exit and save

Note: You can skip this step if you have a backup of the Original Mod.esp

Your mod in game will now use Original mod.esp as a master and should preform like any other mod that requires a DLC.

Remember though you can't just open a .esp in the Ckit and make a new mod requiring it. If you try all edits will be lost because the Ckit tosses out and .esp requirements.

Hope that clear and helpful.

Edit: You can also keep Original Mod.esp and Original Mod.esm in your data folder at the same time just be sure you only activate one when loading the game.

Awesome! Thank you for the clear and concise directions, as well as the timely response!

This seems fairly straightforward. I shall have to start over, but I've barely put a half dozen hours into it yet, and that includes starting over once already.

Again, thank you very much!
