Handofbane
Read what is actually being said, not just the first line then jumping to a conclusion. We like the game, and can see where its potential down the road can be really great, even "GOTY material", but in its current state, and on release, it cannot be called "best game of the year" while being truly honest and forthright. When people are unable to get the game to run crash-free without being forced to used third-party extensions (4gb enabler), and despite KNOWING this is a source of many problems, Bethesda had two patches where they could have set the simple flag on the file to allow recognition of more than 2gb RAM, but failed to both times, with only a comment on the last patch notes "We are going to look into fixing this sometime soon." And Portal won because it's Valve. They don't put crank out tons upon tons of game, but when they do, they are better able to spread themselves out seeing as they have a solid grip on the majority of the PC gaming market, what with Steam and all. firstprice
Why do people care that much what others think of a game?
Stormcrown
Bethesda won these awards rightfully. If they didn't, where are the legions of other studios and companies pumping out games that are better than Skyrim? It comes down to the fact that DESPITE being buggy, its still GOTY-quality. And I seriously don't see any other game even approaching Skyrim.

Handofbane
Wtf are you doing on it? I have it on xbox360 and pc, and it has never crashed once. Maybe you just have a piece of s*** computer or something. What am I doing on it that is wrong? Apparently using a 64-bit operating system. You know, the kind that can actually make use of 4gb+ RAM, improving performance overall. I had no crashes at all before patch 1.2, since that patch (as well as since 1.3) I see a crash every day or two, but I am one of the lucky ones (I am using the 4gb enabler, which does help). Other folks on this forum as well as the official one have repeatedly reported their high end systems are suffering more crashes than lower end hardware rigs, in some cases as often as crashes every 5-10 minutes. This is not a case of faulty or subpar hardware, this is something inherently wrong with how Bethesda coded their software. Edit: All this on top of the UI designed purely for console controllers, which happens to be downright terrible for keyboard/mouse users. Bethesda rushed to meet their artificially self-imposed deadline, and managed somehow to completely forget their original core user-base was on PC, so they could slam out a game designed to run on 5+ year old hardware and draw in large quantities of sales from people who neither know nor care about the lore behind the game, or the previous games, let alone the RPG genre. Face it, Skyrim straddles the line between RPG and action/adventure game.
OnlyOneWing
I am running 64bit OS, which makes full use of my 64bit CPU and my more than 4gb of combined ram and video memory...(If you have 1gb video memory and 4gb ram on 32bit OS, your computer will only recognize 3gb of your system memory and use the 1gb off the video card...thereby wasting 1gb of ram... most people don't know that) I love the game... but it does crash frequently and when it does run for more than an hour or so it slows down massively then I have to restart the game and it's back at full speed again. Which means the game has memory leaks...I've experienced quest glitches also... and tons of strange things, like some textures not appearing as they should. I've worked in the computer industry and have been building custom computers for more than 14 years... So, yeah... What is your experience? CloudVvulf
While I do think that Skyrim does deserve GOTY. I also think that the awards are pretty pointless at the moment, until there is one committee and one organization whose purpose is to choose which game is the greatest game of the year regardless of what is currently trending in the markets. Some games like Earthbound, Xenogears and many more never received due recognition in their time... Besides, who ever remembers what games were "Game of the year" five years ago?Oblivion got GOTY 5 years ago. If you'd said any other year I wouldn't of had a clue. Skyrim deserves GOTY, partially because the competition is pretty bad. The Witcher 2, if it is as good as The Witcher 1, should have gotten PC game of the year. OnlyOneWing
True. Skyrim is a great game... but it should have been sooo much better. What seriously undermines the great things in Skyrim are the hundreds of little things that could have easily been done to make the game absolutely amazing. Yeah. modders will do those things, and have done some of them... But in the end anyone would have to be in denial or caught up in the hype to say that Bethesda didn't sell us short when they promised so much and delivered about 70% on it. Then on top of it, a lot of people experience minor problems with the game... and some people have major problems with it. I had one quest that I couldn't have ever completed without using the console because a NPC glitched and disappeared from the world.
Handofbane
Some of those gamebreaking bugs can be a bit funny, in a very sad way though. I had one NPC vanish and had to start a new character because I was cut off from the main quest... all because Gerdur's son decided to disappear from the world, thus never appearing to give his excited little questioning of Ralof at Riverwood. Because he never showed up, Ralof, Gerdur and Hod all got stuck permanently on the little island, never moving or asking me to go to Whiterun. Thankfully it was early enough in the game not to be a big deal.
OnlyOneWing
Gulum-Ei disappeared for me. Thank God that some one figured out the right console code to make him reappear. I had to fight my way through a dungeon and then stand in a room an enter a console code to make him reappear... it was awkward but it worked, so I was able to continue the thieves guild plot.
