Unable to save after starting last quest for Alduin (possible spoilers

Over 100 hours into the game and I decide to go ahead and ride the dragon up the mountain to go kill Alduin. Once I get there I notice that saved games are not showing up, but my quicksave is working. I figured maybe this was a side effect of being in this particular place in the game.

After ending Alduin I noticed that this did not go away. I can start a completely new game with a new character and cannot save the game. I have a few hours saved on a quicksave and it's my only way of proceeding. The game itself is played through Steam; I've tried verifying the game cache and moved about half of the nearly 400 saved games to a different folder.

Anyone had this problem/know the fix? Should I just move all my saves and reinstall the game on Steam? I'd like to avoid this as I'd have to download the whole thing again on a slow dsl line.

verifying the game cache if you done that i don't think you would have to re-install the game. since it checks for missing files and/or corrupted ones.

Edit:

something like that?

" I tried changing .ess.tmp to just a ess file and it shows up in the save list but just loads forever. Made a copy of the file first. Unless you have an ESS file I think you are screwed.

If you have an ESS file it should show up in game. "

I have plenty of .ess files, I just can't create any new ones. I'm not sure I understand what's being recommended here. Anyway, here's how I fixed it.

I cut and pasted every autosave and regular save to another folder except the most recent regular save and my quicksave. Started the game up and now I can create new saves without a problem. Hope this helps someone. I still wish I knew what the actual cause was. It seemed like either the game decided I had too many saves or one of those save files was preventing further saves.
