Hi I am playing skyrim with a decent amount of mods and im getting low fps in towns in general. I just bought a 6970 and im running skyrim on ultra settings. my specs are below and my main question is should I have gotten a gtx 570 instead? Fps can run anywhere from 17-37

OS: Win Ult 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @2.83GHz

Memory: 6Gb ddr2

GPU: HIS Radeon 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5

I really though that I would have absolutely no trouble doing whatever I wanted with skyrim with these specs, am I completely wrong?

running CCC 11.11

below are screenshots of my game settings.

thanks for any help in advanced.

I am playing at 1920x1080, I updated from a 4870 to 6970 for the ability to max out/mod skyrim specifically. I am using the 4GB Skyrim address fix.

@bobbydodo

I am done playing for tonight and I will try those shadow settings tomorrow

@d3vo

my AA/AF can be found in the images (but i dont blame you for not looking)

AA: 4x

AF: 8x

as for overclocking i'd rather not take that path, honestly ive never overclocked in my life and I know little about it, but if I remember correctly it shortens your CPU lifespan and i'd rather not do that.

Nope. Win 7 64bit and Radeon 6950 here, no overclocking, no useless services/apps running in background. Works fine.

Hope you're not using in-game AA/AF. In that case you have to set AA and AF to 0 in the Skyrim Launcher, then open the CCC and force whatever AA and AF setting you desire and then run the game.

I play 1920x1080 with a 5870 and average ~55 FPS. CCC set to application defined and Skyrim to 0x AA, 8x AF, and FXAA on are my preferred settings. I have a faster CPU, but I think that if you drop shadows a notch, drop AA to 2x or 0x, and use FXAA that you should see similiar performance and still have good image quality.

Yea sry, I must have skimmed over the pics. It could be your V-Sync...I've always turned off V-Sync for any game I play.

so here is a quick update...

I am playing now with CCC doing AA 4X and AF 8X, and my V-sync is now off.

I am planning on taking some benchmarks with Fraps in the next couple of days; however, as a college student finishing up the semester, my free time is limited.

I wanted to ask a follow up question regarding the classic Radeon vs Nivida. I'm not looking for a big discussion, but I am still able to return my radeon 6970 and get all my money back. In general will I see a better performance with a GTX 570?

Or does it come down to my CPU and just getting the settings right? Also, I'm not planning on doing any SLI or Crossfire.

The only programs I run during play are game booster 3, to kill unneeded windows services, and fraps so I guess I really feel like i should be getting much better performance with my $330 GPU. Is the CPU really dragging down the GPU by that much? - I'm not looking to OC in any way, I have no experience with that and I don't exactly want to take that route.

Below are my specs re-posted from above:

OS: Win Ult 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @2.83GHz

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS5 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel

RAM: 6Gb (3x2Gb) ddr2

GPU: HIS Radeon 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5

Resolution: 1920x1080

cheers
