How Companion Dual Wielding Works!

So over the past week or so exams permitting I've been messing around trying to figure out how to get companions to dual wield.

It was hit or miss at first I could get Jenassa to DW, I also managed to get Borgahk the Steel Heart to DW. I had zero success with any of the houscarl companions. At first I thought it was tied to light armor versus heavy armor. That proved to be incorrect.

I made the key discovery when I was playing with Borgahk and I upgraded her to two glass waraxes. She stopped DWing. I switched her back to forsworn swords, she started DWing again.

That is the trick, some weapons seem to be flagged to allow NPC DWing and others are not. The way it works is, if they are carrying a weapon that can be dual wielded, they will use it offhand if they do not have a shield.

So far from my testing.

Offhandable weapons:

Blades Sword

Forsworn Sword

Forsworn Axe

Not offhandable weapons (Tested so far)

Glass Sword

Ebony Sword

Ebony Dagger

Glass Waraxe

Skyforge Steel waraxe

What this means is, by removing the default shield from your companions and giving them at least one offhandable weapon you should have a dual wielding companion. For anyone who doesn't know how to remove a default shield from a companions inventory. Hit tilde. Click on your companion with your mouse cursor. Now type "showinventory" look for the item code for the shield. Now type "removeitem <item code here without brackets>".
