Skyrim/Firefox

Hey i don't know if i am the only person with this problem or if it is an easily fixed one.

While playing Skyrim (not in windowed mode) and i ALT+TAB to switch to an open firefox, it works fine, but when i try and switch back to Skyrim it crashes 100% of the time.

Is there a way to switch back and forth from a web browser and skyrim?

any solutions would be much appreciated! :biggrin:

Most Bethesda games are as far as I am aware prone to this and recommend against the use of ALT+TAB whilst running the game so i would suggest you do as the rest of us and save and exit and then restart skyrim after checking your browser.

 

It's not too bad, skyrim starts up quite quickly.

If you're not married to Firefox as your browser you can use Shift+Tab and use the steam overlay browser.

There is a web browser in steam as well. That's what I tend to use when playing a steam game.

Doesn't crash for me and works fine. I don't know what issue you are having, might be worth investigating since it's definitely not normal. I know Skyrim has problems with some overlays, maybe Steam is causing it?

 

Edit: For reference, system is W7 Ult x86_64, HD4890, game on Ultra+ (full screen), catalyst 11.11c.

It must be some system specific reason for that sort of crash.

 

Reason I say that, I'm not having that sort of issue at all here.

I tab out of Skyrim quite a lot and to the desktop , use Firefox or whatever

else I need to do then tab back to the game. No crashing due to that series of events, anyway.

That said, tabbing back to Skyrim can be fun as it takes two cycles of the window manager to get the Skyrim screen to come alive again, as the first

pass results in a black screen.

 

I run the game in full screen.

Nvidia graphics hardware (full specs in sig)

285.x series drivers but now at 290.x something beta ones just released. Neither had effect on the above.

Ultra mode in game if that makes any difference.

 

I suspect it must be some driver issue in relation to the hardware you are using or if that isn't the case some

bizarre interaction with some background software you may be using that systems like mine are not using, or some

damnable combination of all that.

 

It is with that reason that I always encourage ANYONE posting such a complaint to ALWAYS include system specs, such

as is in my signature below. If you fail to do that then you fail at the most basic means of diagnosis of any PC related issue.

 

EDIT. The inverse of this statement is equally true. If you post to a thread mentioning you do not have the 'issue' at hand

it is helpful in the extreme to provide system specs . If you fail to do that, you fail at helping find a cause, presuming

that is your goal in posting.

 

 

If this offends anyone then my job is done for the day.

I too alt-tab to Firefox all the time without issue.

 

I sometimes find that I have to select Skyrim twice when going back but that's all, it never crashes.

I have this exact same problem, I wondered if it was something to do with one of my addons, do you use any of these? - No script, Ad Blocker, Bookmarks and a no cookies one (can't remember the name now )

 

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5739G, Intel Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce GT130, 4GB Mem.

 

I have to reload a lot, its a real pain when I want to Alt/Tab something quickly like chatting on messenger.

 

I am a bit of a noob with tech stuff but can follow clear instructions well if anyone knows what this might be or how to fix it? :thumbsup:

What I do for alt-tabbing back in is I click on the skyrim program, hit alt tab then holding alt down I right click and it brings the game back up no problems.
