Disappearing text

Ok, i put this out in the faint hope that somebody had this and fixed it before. :confused:

I've seen a couple of sufferers in the forums here and on the Beth ones but no answers.

 

What it is is intermittent disappearance of all text from containers, map markers, spell lists, merchant inventories and journal entries. Basically anything menu based except my own inventory for some reason.

 

It started a while ago, every now and then, and messing with load orders would usually solve it.

I went through the usual ( and i stress this, already went part) removal of mods and applying them again.

 

Here's the thing. It comes and goes, without me changing anything now. One time i start the game and there's text. Next time there isn't. Aaarrgghhhh!!!

So removing mods is no use because i can't trust the result.

 

My UI mods are Dark UI by Greybird, Dark wz inventory, Dark UI and Major Jim's, Dark UI skills and Stats, Dark UI Quick-wheel, and Immersive Interface.

 

If anybody can think of anything likely to be the culprit before i reinstall I would appreciate any help you can before i take my PC to the bottom of my garden and set it alight.

This is most likely from your interface mods. However, before you go uninstalling those, did you look in the "Fonts" folder (in the "Data" folder)? If you're using alternate fonts, sometimes that might be the case. I might be wrong, but check it and see.

I considered that and to be honest everything seems as it should be with the alternative Darn fonts there and the .ini as it should be. But in case something i dont know how to look for has happened to those font files i've re-downloaded Dark UI and replaced those font files.

So far the text is there but because of the way it comes and goes being part of the problem i'll have to wait and see if that's solved it.

It would be good to get a definitive answer on this one for others as well as myself because i've seen a few posts with the same problem and it hasn't been solved yet as far as i know.

It’s happened to me before, and was always the result

of a particular mod I just added.

 

Drove me crazy. Once it starts its hard to undo.

 

Can you list your mods?

 

I might see something that rings a bell.

 

Are you running SI?

 

I think the last one I had trouble with was a map marker mod,

but I can’t remember the name.

 

The trouble with that one was it couldn't handle new markers,

not already in its database.

 

I went through all the same stuff you are describing.

 

Reinstalling the fonts didn’t help me either.

 

But I did get it straightened out.

I'm away from my PC for the next couple of days so i can't list all my mods yet but i will. I posted on the Beth forums too and the someone mentioned Streamline which is the only overlap i have so far. I'm not saying that this is in any way the culprit but i've disabled it for now (version 3.0) and will test when i get back home.

 

Replacing the fonts didn't solve it.

My feeling is that its mod related too but the randomness of having it disappear and re-appear with the same mods running is making it hard to pinpoint the baddy.

There's obviously something breaking the path to the fonts or the menu xtml files or something but what would do this apart from UI mods i don't know. Especially intermitantly. Thanks again for responding with ideas and support.

I felt that this thread was worth a bump just to update and support anyone who might suffer the same problem.

At the suggestion of someone on the official forums I disabled Streamline 2.1 last month.

The problem immediately stopped happening. ...Except for one time.

So its not by any means proof that Streamline was causing me these problems and I've not been able to find any posts relating it to text issues.

All I can say is that I enabled Streamline 3.0 yesterday and my fonts vanished for the first time in three weeks.

Like I say its not scientific proof but in practice I can't deny that it looks like I'm better off not running it.

Apologies to Stormraven for not listing my mods after all but at this point the fault seems to be located and there are many to list. Time will tell if I'm really out of the woods.

Lastly, I say all this anecdotaly and this should in no way be viewed as an accusation or warning against using Jaga's excellent Streamline program.

Its just what's working for me.

If this or any other action has results for anyone in a similar text pickle, please add to this thread.
