"Extra bleeding damage" Perk- What does it mean?

The "hack & slash" perk on the one handed tree and the "limbsplitter" perk on the two handed tree both say attacks with axes do extra bleeding damage... can anyone tell me what it does?

It adds a damage over time effect to things you hit with your axe. I remember reading that the effect stacks with itself, meaning that if you hit something multiple times the bleed effect will last longer or do more damage. I do not remember the specifics on that though.

Anyone know how much damage per level of the perk?

It is a useless perk in my experience... things die from your blows long before the bleeding kills them. I've never been able to notice the DOT.

I've never seen concrete proof of what exactly the bleeding effect is, whether it stacks, or even if it does anything at all. Everything is speculation.

UESP still claims that 2H axes do more DPS than the other weapons though. Swords and Axes have the same speed, which might be a bug or might be intended, hard to say. It is clear that bleeding damage from a 2H weapon is worthless no matter what it does since 2 whacks kills pretty much anything that bleeds.

I honestly choose between axes or swords for aesthetic reasons on a per character basis. I never take the sword perk beyond the first level anyway - diminishing returns etc.
