Steam Controller with Skyrim and Fallout 4?

Recommended Posts

I've been contemplating whether or not to buy a Steam controller. The choice is not made easy considering that I am in Australia, and the most immediate way I can obtain one is through eBay for about $120. Now, normally I use keyboard and mouse controls - I don't play Skyrim or Fallout 4 with my Xbox controller because of how clunky the aiming is, but I do like the smoothness of the character movement. The Steam Controller, from what I gather, appears to allow for somewhat better aiming while retaining the benefits of a controller.

So I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the Steam Controller in Skyrim and Fallout 4, and if they could tell me how well it functions. Is it playable? Comfortable, even? It it easy to set up? Anything to help influence my decision would be appreciated. :)

Playing Skyrim, I found the Steam controller a lot smoother and more comfortable than an Xbox controller, but it still doesn't beat a mouse when it comes to aiming a bow. I'm currently playing as an archer, though, so I didn't pay much attention to the aim in hand-to-hand combat. The character movement was excellent, though. I thought the setup was a pain. I found myself back in the setup menu over and over again, trying to fine-tune the settings until I got the aiming and control I wanted, but I gave up and went back to my keyboard and mouse and actually playing the game. I'm still not convinced there isn't a way to make it work, though...

All this being said, Skyrim wasn't meant to be compatible with the controller, so I'm assuming I won't regret getting it when I eventually play something else... but I don't live in Australia and didn't have to pay nearly as much as that.

Haven't played Fallout 4 yet.

Technically the Steam controller on paper is a little marvelous diamond, I have one collecting dust on my desk.

First you need to play games in Big Picture mode with Steam to get it work fully (and the game must support it) and that I have not yet found a workaround for since most people run the Bethesda games from a mod organizer tool with SKSE or upcoming F4SE. So thats the first major culprit.

Second I have tried to play games without Big Picture, and well Windows OS do detect and install all drivers needed but in game you have only 50% of the controller working so that makes it a dead end. Game creators do only reflect to support Xbox and Logitech controllers but Steam controller adds some drivers that standard games don't detect.

To get back to your major interest I presume and sincerely hope Steam controller do has better precision than other standard controllers (that's the reason I bought one) but I have not been able to play a game I 100% like using to compare it against keyboard and mouse setup.

So if not someone great person on Internet makes a wrapper application to make Steam controller work in legacy games I would say this is a dead end, sorry. It IS a superior controller but without application support to use it like you want it does not matter how superior the thing you have in your hands is.

I do hope things have changed since I got my device a year ago, but I have not stumbled on any updates that tells otherwise. If someone have good news to tell, please let us know!

yes I have... but altho it's a BIG improvement from lesser controllers...xbox...in particular... there is still however a big issue with aiming...for this reason alone I still use mouse and keyboard..I suppose IF I practiced enough I might become proficient but the learning curve is steep and so... my steam controller gathers dust on the shelf..you might do better...it is quite different and better in many ways...but the aiming I find tedious and S-L-O-W...which means while you are drawing a bead on em ..you are also taking massive damage quick shots?...well... maybe... you'll get a shot off before you die..and also.. I'm not proficient at toe to toe sword fights in games... so I'm referring only to the archery in skyrim..this game has the best archery I have seen in a game so far..that's why I like it...also I think this limitation would also apply to firearm aiming in many other games
