How to add custom music?

Hey just came across your post. I've found out that the music for Skyrim is actually located in the Sounds.bsa file, but as far as how to change it I don't know any way yet. However, I've read a few other places that you can just make a music folder in the data folder and place songs in that folder the same way that it shows in the sounds.bsa and it should work. I haven't tested this yet, but if it works then I'll let you know. n_n Might take me a few hours, but I'll be back with a reply if it works or not.

:EDIT:

Okay so here is the deal with how to change the music for Skyrim. Download something like BSAopt or BSACommander and open up the Skyrim - Sounds. bsa music folder through either, then extract them to where ever you wish. Also make sure that you have xwmaencode.exe, which can be downloaded with the Microsoft DirectX SDK (June 2010). Once you've downloaded and installed it, open up command prompt. Make sure that when you type in the file names for the .xwm that they match up with the names of the files you wish to replace and that the files you wish to convert are in the same folder as the xwmaencode.exe, otherwise this won't work.

Type in 'xwmaencode <insertfilename.wav> <insertfilename.xwm>' then press enter. For example, to make '1.wav' into the main menu music, type 'xwmaencode 1.wav mus_maintheme.xwm and press enter. Make sure to put these files in the same directory as they are shown in the Skyrim - Sounds.bsa, and put all folders used into a folder named Music then just place that into the Skyrim Data folder.

This all should work. It worked for me. I already tested it. If it doesn't seem to work for anyone, then it's probably something on your end not working correctly. Sorry if some things are confusing, not really good with descriptions. lol But if someone has questions feel free to ask away.

Unfortunately I've never had mine crash when adding custom music, so I really don't know what to tell you about that. The only real big problem that I've noticed with adding custom music is the way that Bethesda has the music coding set up, making it to where if you get into a battle with a dragon, the music never stops until you either reload a current save file(which you can save after the dragon is dead and that current save will reset the music) or let the music finish. Hm....*thinks*..Have you made sure that the file format and the name the song is replacing is the same as what you want to replace is all correct? It should be in .xwm file format. For instance, the song you want to replace should be encoded to the .xwm file format which I described above how to make it into that format and the title should be the same as the song you want to replace, such as mus_maintheme.xwm for the file's name that would replace the title music. I really don't know much more about it other than that may be the problem. Are you running a steam bought version? If not then that could also be your problem.

My Skyrim crashes if I add custom music.

I tried to replace the tavern music files and everytime i step into tavern the Skyrim crashes.

Any help?

This mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=13286 (shameless plug, I know...) let's you add or, if you wish, replace the vanilla music with your own. You only need .wav files to do it.

Solved it! But I did it with the personalizedmusic - mod.

I guess I just converted the wav files to xwm wrong.

But anyways, it works!

Thanks for this topic.

I'll be partying in the tavern.

Ok, 1st off you need a program to covert music to a format Skyrim can use.

This one works nicely: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8303/?

2nd we need to be able to see file extensions like .wav . xvm ...

That needs to be set in your folder options on your PC. [ Show file extensions ]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then create a new folder in the music folder of Skyrim

exp: Skyrim/data/music/mysongs

Drop in all your music now converted from .mp3 to .xwm format (use the program listed above)

exp: mysong.mp3 to mysong.xvm

Then find any .wav file copy and rename it to the same name as your .xvm file

Exp: mysong.wav

Now you should have all your music in .xvm format and a second fake file of the same name

in .wav format in your new folder ...

exp:

mysong.wav

mysong.xvm

From the CK's Object Window go to Audio then Music Track

Edit the file named MUSCastleImperial01 (a good template for what we are doing here)

Rename it to the name of your song or what ever you like and leave the [ Single Track ] option as is.

move down to [ Choose File ] and select your .wav file ... Hit [ Ok ] when done and YES to create a new form.

From the CK's Object Window go to Audio then Music Type

Edit the file named MUSDungeonCleared (a good template for what we are doing here)

Rename it to the name of your song or what ever you like and leave the [ Plays One Selection ] and

[ Ducks Current Track ] options as they are. Change priority to something like 44 and change

[ Fade Duration ] to something like 8.0000 and [ Ducking ] to something like 60.0000 ...

Remove the four tracks listed (highlight and press delete) Right click where those tracks were and pick new.

Add the track you just created in the last step. Hit [ Ok ] when done and YES to create a new form.

(you may need to close and reopen the to be able to add your new track, make sure to still say yes to new form)

If you want more then one track to this playlist add them here as you did the one.

Go with a [ Priority ] of say 45, [ fade ] at 2.0000 no Ducking and only [ Cycle Tracks ] selected.

You now can delete the fake .wav files keeping the .xvm formatted files in your new music folder.

Now you have a playlist linked to the song(s) you wish to play. From the CK's Cell View window

Edit a cell from the tab [ Common data ] change Music type to your new music list ...

Done, custom music. Keep in mind you can now change that music by simply replacing the .xvm file

with the same name you picked when you added it to the kit.

If this is a custom mod you are creating you can use the [ Create Archive ] option to include your music in the .bsa file.

or for loose file keep the folder structure as you made it.

Exp: Skyrim/data/music/mysongs ... with all your .xvm files

I name the files i'm going to add like this:

_NAMEOFMOD_Music_Track01 and so on.

gl, have fun

Personalized musci mod is s***. It doesnt even explain what to do. I have my converted file and what now? Its stupid , idiotic mod with terrible explanation at least.

If memory serves me well, Personalized Music comes with an exhaustive readme on everything from what software is necessary to convert into the Skyrim audio format, to naming conventions of the files, to where the files should go.

I am a simple man (I found installing an ENB to be a more complicated process), but I found that the Personalized Music mod worked exactly as advertised. Due diligence was all I needed.
