Enemy Mages

What is the best method to kill a boss mage NPC? I've played through a few characters now and I'm still having trouble killing them. When I'm playing a warrior I can't even get close. They 2-3 shot me most of the time and I end up having to load up on magic resistances to even have a chance. This becomes pretty irritating when you're at lower levels and enchanting isn't as much of a tool yet. I'd rather focus on my combat skills first and foremost so I can kill everything else.

Dragons are hilariously easy and the common boss mage can put a whooping on my melee characters more so than anything else in the game. The elemental resistances you get from the block tree really does help but is there any other way for a warrior to combat these guys?

No other way. The blocking perk is a must for a warrior vs mages. If you are sneaky, of course, mages cease being any problem at all. Or - boost elemental/magic resistance with enchanted items/perks and celestial stones. Edited by TimF

Atronach stone .

Resist magic Stuff or enchant .

The Block perk that add 50 % of resist .

Lightning/Damage Magicka weapon//spell for deplete his magicka .

Conjure Atronach of the element he use , they are virtually invincible versus him .

they are a lot of solution .

But i agree they are very strong , I believe the easiest way at low level is Sneak attack them .

It can look obvious but put all your level upgrade in Life is something very important in skyrim because high stamina and Magicka are pretty much useless when you try to play in Expert or Master .

Yeah, the only way I've been able to stay alive long enough to kill them is to spam potions. It wouldn't be so bad if they had a little less health. I feel like some of these bosses have even more health than me. That wouldn't be a problem if they were a typical tank/warrior but they're mages with powerful spells and I believe magic ignores armor correct?

They're just a pain in the rear to deal with until you get the elemental resistance block perk and until you're able to safely invest in enchanting (without exploiting the game).

As said there are a lot of solutions besides the block perk and enchantments.

-Taking the proper stone sign is one of the best method for levels when mages start using more than novice spells.

-Potions, healing, resist and specially poison if you do alchemy. A poison to stop their mana regen usually stops them long enough and you can still deplete their mana pool easily at low levels, unlike higher level mages.

-Companions and summons that can deplete their mana while you run around. When they start to slow down for regen, you then use a resist potion then attack and hope you kill them first.

-That or if you're one handed, dropping the shield and spamming dual wielding power attack with potions and food also work instead of tanking their damage.

-And more you can probably think off.

One of the early boss mages I faced when I was low leveled, I used magical staffs I picked up from loot and spammed him with it. They were strong enough staffs that was stun the opponent on a direct hit. Also health pots and fire/ice/shock pots helps a lot too.

Alt-sprint forward and doing a sprint attack, if you got a perk it does criticial damage and bashes the enemy interrupting whatever he was doing as soon as your mana is out after power attacking him a few times use potions if hp low or run away:D

note: using a paralyze enchant or posion helps a lot
