New guy requesting help

Hello everyone.

With all this talk about how Great Skyrim is, I thought I'd do the logical thing, and buy Oblivion from Steam and install mods for my first time ever (WoW doesn't count).

So please bear with me here as I make some newbie mistakes.

I set out to mod five things about the game.

-I wanted the bugfixes

-I wanted a decent UI

-I wanted the gameplay balanced

-I wanted a prettier world

-I wanted prettier bodies and faces

-I did not want anything that changed the game too drastically as I'm playing it for the first time here.

Of course those five mods are now something like fifty >.<

To manage these I installed OBMM, as well as Wrye Bash, BOSS and TES4EDIT. I won't pretend to know what I'm doing, but I did manage to follow the instructions and install most of them without trouble. I mostly followed advice from threads on SA and Reddit.

I do still have trouble though, and while I think I can fix some more, it's been three days of downloading and installing and testing mods, so what I'm asking here is for some help to get me the rest of the way.

I'll provide a screenshot of OMOD, Wrye Bash, info on my pc, etc, whatever info is needed. Let me know.

Now first off, the game crashes every time I try to exit, which seems to me a sign that things aren't yet optimal.

Animated Window Lighting System seems to give a lot of trouble with other mods. It seems to work best with All Natural, but not so with Natural Enviroments.

OBGE Removes all text from my menu, unless I turn off AA.

Body wise, I tried Cobl, EVE, HGEC Body and Robert's Male and Female body. Sometimes some npc's are bald, sometimes they are missing eyes...HGEC seems to work fine, but only for the body, leaving the same old ugly faces, only now with a jarring seam around the neck.

The game starts and loads slowly, though I assume that's normal with the size of these mods. The game does tend to crash on alt-tab though, and I can't find a windowed maximized mode.

Some remarks:

The inventory displays items' weight and value, but no weight to value ratio. Is there a mod for that?

All I found for that was Display Stats, which isn't quite what I had in mind.

Deadly Reflex is hard to figure out. What keys did you guys bind your bash and dodge and other keys to?

Do you guys have any clothing mods you personally like? Plenty of armour mods out there, but less so decent clothing mods (unless you count the wildly fantastical ones)

Camera in first person mode seems to be a bit skewed, I think it's Deadly Combat?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

TL-DR: First timer here, in over his head. Please help me get set up.

Now first off, the game crashes every time I try to exit, which seems to me a sign that things aren't yet optimal.

The following mod should help to counter this: Fast Exit. It's not guaranteed to prevent crashing on exit, but it does heavily reduce the likelihood of it happening.

OBGE Removes all text from my menu, unless I turn off AA.

This is unfortunately an inherent limitation within OBGE, so you can't use AA directly with OBGE. However, there is a way to get around this limitation. OBGE comes with a series of AA shaders which you can use to provide the effect in place of the main AA setting in-game. I personally use MDLAA, which does a very nice job.

The game does tend to crash on alt-tab though, and I can't find a windowed maximized mode.

Here's a windowed maximized mod that should fix the alt-tab crashing: Fake Full Screen Mode.

I hope this helps you some way towards getting Oblivion to work as you want. Good luck! :)

That was a fast reply! Thank you!

I'm going to install those two mods now.

I can't even remember why I installed OBGE in the first place, probably because some other mod asked for it. (as is the case with over half the installed stuff here).

Fullscreen mode gave a little trouble, but it's working now. Great!

Fast Exit seems to work fine too! (it only failed once in the five times I tried it)

Thanks again for those.

Have you seen Nitefox98's thread on the subject?

I've read a few threads to that effect, though not this particular one (bookmarked it). I'm already seeing some more mods I'd like.

Maybe I should have used a combined mod pack for my first attempt, but there are just too many fun looking mods I want to try out.

Do you suppose it's easier to fix existing conflicts now, or to just delete all mods (I still have their install files) and start over?

I'm thinking that once the base mods and big ones (patch, obmm, obse, obge, qarls, etc) are installed, that smaller mods should be easier to install.

Right now though I'm just happy (most of them) are working. I was up all night the other day installing all of them.

Oh I know all too well how time flies when you're modding Oblivion! My own machine doesn't have the oomph for many of the visual quality mods, and I'm not one for 'overhauls' myself so I can't be of much support there. From what I've seen, the usual advice is to get the vanilla game installed (and not in Program Files if you run either Vista or Win 7) and patched to version 1.2.0416, install OBSE and OBMM and then run through the sewers tutorial. Just before you exit the sewers make a save (this will come in handy if you want to start another character and don't want to go through the whole tutorial dungeon again). Make another save after exiting the sewers (your base save for that character). Travel to the Imperial City and have a stroll around there (the Market District is one of the most stressful spots). If everything is stable then add your visual tweak mods. Don't add a bunch and then test ... add one or two things and then test for both quality and stability. When you run into the inevitable problem you'll know exactly what you've added from your last stable point, which will make troubleshooting much easier. I believe the overhauls are next if you are going to use them (e.g. FCOM or OOO). If you're going to use landscape overhauls they'll need to figure into the order too ... not sure if before or after things like FCOM etc.

Another thing to keep in mind ... the game is meant to be fun, don't forget to play as well as mod. Rome doesn't need to be built in one day.

You're right, Rome was exactly what I was building here.

The idea of saving before leaving the sewers is so brilliant I'm ashamed I didn't think of it myself.

So far the market district runs fine, though not having played the game before I can't tell if the graphics are different.

I do wish the npc's got their eyes and hair back though.

Once I build up the courage I might do a full reinstall with all the mods.

As for playing, I'd love to start! (I looted every chest and barrel in the market area so far), but until I get the xp mods, balancing mods and of course, Deadly Reflex to work properly, there's little real playing I can do.

If you have a look through the many and various threads here you'll find a number of missing eyes and hair threads ... might save a re-install. If you do go the re-install route have a look through Bben46's Oblivion reinstall procedure.

As a Body mod I would prefer a HGEC body nude (female), (male) because tons of clothing are based on this mod.

get a new hairstyles

races find yourself, if you like. My favourite Elves of Lineage IIcause there are some fine modifications you find if you search them on tesnexus.

If you are a good modder and not afraid of japanese Stuff you can take MBP for better looking People. You need:

How to install is here Part oneand part two

Your eyes problem comes from this. Beautifull people uses two eyes texture, european only one.

then you probably need a animation replacer http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35551

and now You have a fine person walking through Oblivion.

for better athmosphere I suggest

If you don't like leveling system try oblivion war cry,( english translation) and only the boss monsters will level up.

slofs mens wear http://www.slofslair.co.uk/index.php?page=modarticle&modarticle/id=6024hiatkkd

female clothing Rhyks work http://www.zodiac.o0o0.jp/rayk/ryk_mod_etc.html

all not to sexy like some things here, but if you like them better, have a look.

for weapons gizmodians work http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=341209

and nicos work http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=64989

for better looking Horses http://www.slofslair.co.uk/index.php?page=modarticle&modarticle/id=5p5k6md28n8

my most liked housemod or have a look to Real estate

companionmods: Vilja , Saerilet, , blade song and a mod I adore but cant really use because its from Japan

You personalize your game by taking your favourite mods. No other one plays the same game.

Oblivion is in my opinion the most and best modded game in the world.

Don't forget ;) and a Happy new year in modding

have fun

Harvald
